Village Park Restaurant @ Damansara Utama, Kuala Lumpur

Image
Having tried nasi lemak that dignitaries patronize in Johor, here comes Village Park that has won the hearts and stomachs of KL-ians. I was definitely not expecting a turn out like this but it seems like norm. There is both a takeaway and table queue. Servers clad in their signature orange shirts come around to take orders - assuming your hands are fastest enough to catch them in between clearing tables and delivering orders. Prices for reference. Nasi Lemak Set (RM 10.40) A staple at every table, it's almost cardinal sin visiting Village Park and ordering anything else. Portions are good enough for two truth be told. Juicy, absolutely tender and the generous coating of ginger and lemongrass was sufficient to sent me straight to chicken heaven. The batter was so crisp, I could just eat keropok out of these! Oh man. Best of 2017, this has to be. Nothing fancy, except down to earth solid good stuff. Bergedil (RM 1.80) that was rather ordinary but well with such an outstanding nasi

TW Original Cake @ Sunway Velocity, Kuala Lumpur

Image
I cannot leave Malaysia without eating an egg sponge cake - and I was even toying with the idea of ordering the famous 3D Durian Cakes as a logcake but it was too pricey to pay for a 1.2kg durian cream cake. And then I found out TW Original Cake has an exclusive flavor! Original flavor is the only one baked freshly, the other flavours are chilled. Durian King (RM 30) unfortunately is not made on the spot, they are already chilled when we got ours and I guess hot durian cake hinges on gross tasting anyway? The consistency is there except the cakes had plenty of cracks, from the freshly baked to the chilled ones so if appearance matters then this outlet at Sunway Velocity does not make the cut. That said, we had our cheapest "logcake" in years and boy, it was delicious. It does taste like durian cream cake with the durian pulp woven in cleverly. Do give this new flavor a try when you're in Malaysia!

Limapulo: Baba can cook @ Jalan Doraisamy, Kuala Lumpur

Image
After having such great Peranakan food in Johor Bahru, I was so convinced anywhere else out of Malacca would have equally good Peranakan fare. So, Tripadvisor and a couple of food blogs brought me to Limapulo: Baba Can Cook. Drawn to their crazily affordable lunch sets priced at RM 9.90, we had a field day ordering a number to share. Sate (RM 14.90) Served barely hot, my chicken sates came with skin on and not grilled till charred. Such a disappointment, maybe just grilled chicken would have been a more apt description. Kueh Pie Tees, just because it is peranakan and sadly, except for the shells, the stuffing was way too sweet. Fried Kang Kong Sambal Belachan (RM 15) I thought this was dead spicy and a tad over powering for this vegetable dish. Nasi Lemak (RM 9.90) All the other nasi lemaks have spoiled me so, rendering this so ordinary. Cucur Udang (RM 9.90) is their version of rojak, a medley of dough fritters, cucumber and boiled egg blanketed with a sweet sauce. Curry Chick

Ben's @ Pavilion, Kuala Lumpur

Image
Years back, Ben's had one of the hottest tables in town and years later, it seems the popularity has waned. They held our tables for more than an hour and even then was not filled and came with barely there service. Crispy calamari that was neither crispy nor crunchy, the loosely coated batter was almost falling off these rubbery rings and even the aioli could not redeem the dish. Boo. I swear we all laughed out loud when this steak sandwich arrived coated in cheese and beef toppings. Well, I'd give them some credit, there was actually beef slices within but this definitely does not make the cut as a legit-ly good steak sandwich worth an order. Sold on truffle, I get a bowl of oily burnt and erm overcooked fries in return. Accompanying aioli was too watery for further mention. The duck saved the day - literally. In my dreams I'd love to have a whole duck leg with a pile of pasta, turns out it was shredded duck which was still decently seasoned, my only grouse is there shoul

Ah Mah Homemade Cake @ Terminal 3

Image
~Invited Session~ Ah Mah is now into their 13th outlet at Changi Airport and with this new opening, we were treated to two exclusive flavours for the month of December! Hello exclusive flavours! I expect the snaking queues... Without a doubt their cakes first catch your attention through the fragrance that wafts through the airport. I had the privilege to steal a glimpse at how they bake their cakes - clearly, I learnt zilch of the secret behind these fluffy cakes but I guess, I really do not mind paying for them! Freshly squeezed pandan extract goes into this thick and very creamy cake mixture. I'm amazed how much hand work is involved in getting one tray out - those arm muscles are really built! Smoothening of the layer for that perfect poof. Lo and behold, fresh out of the oven! Only the original and pandan gets inked! P andan ($11) Made with pandan leaves extract, this fragrant one gives our famed pandan chiffon a run for its money. Light and springy
