Tien Court Revisited @ Copthorne King's Hotel

Image
We were once wowed by Tien Court but I suppose tastings should not be used as a gauge of its regular performance. This Groupon deal could have impacted the quality of my meal since the basics like appetizers were missing and our supposed "complimentary carpark coupon" barely waived half of the $6 parking fee we incurred for less than 75 minutes at Copthorne King's. Seasonal Vegetables ($18) Stir fried with garlic, this had too much gravy for my liking though I liked the crunch of the greens. Peking Duck ($38, Half Portion) This was the tastiest of the night's orders, crispy skin wrapped in egg crepes and served with cucumbers and spring onions. We could do with more condiments though. Chopped duck unfortunately was a tad dry but nothing sour plum sauce could not save. Salted Egg Prawns ($30) Laced with a certain sweetness that was reminiscent of condensed milk tossed in mashed salted egg yolk, still a decent dish except it got a tad too much for two of us. Plus,...

Summer Pavilion Revisited @ Ritz Carlton

Image
It definitely did not take long before we booked ourselves a yum cha session with a table full of likeminded friends for a lovely Sunday pig out session. It baffles the Hongkonger husband how Singaporeans hardly have time to enjoy a meal on a Sunday no less - and whilst his childhood days are spent filled with these memories, mine were possibly a far cry spent over a harried lunch somewhere after church. The inviting stairway of Summer Pavilion, regardless day or night still enchants. Truth be told, the lights lining the stairway were part of my house goals! Kitchen ware goals all before me. We all wish we owned just one piece from this entire collection. Yam chips dished out as appetizers, a lovely respite from the peanuts, beancurd cubes and pickled vegetables. Can I gush on and on and on about their plates? The tea menu that comprises of mostly oolong blends, not that we are complaining anyhow. $12 per head for tea applies, before you baulk, these are standard tea prices across most...

Grand Pavilion Revisited @ Esplanade

Image
The bane of running promotions on Groupon means the bargain hunter of a consumer like me would not visit on a normal basis but rather wait for the descent of the next voucher promotion to visit. Grand Pavilion is one of those places I would head back in a heart beat with a Groupon, and that was exactly what happened. Who does not love a good deal, anyway? Whole Peking Duck ($58) Face it, I cannot resist peking duck. It must be the sorcery in that egg crepe, sweet sauce and thin as wafer crispy duck skin that makes me order it every single time. Not forgetting these keropoks! Having the duck chopped up is also a preferred way to eat it except the herbal sauce does make this taste like a herbal duck more than peking duck. Crispy goodness, mmmm! Half Crispy Chicken ($20) Another poultry dish nailed well on crispy skin and crunchy keropok. Sweet and Sour Pork ($27.80) A childhood favourite that usually sees more batter than meat but Grand Pavilion's has a lovely crunch, tangy swe...

Grand Pavilion Revisited @ Esplanade

There are restaurants I do not understand why they even need Groupon yet they are consistently on offer. Grand Pavilion is one of those places. Blame the location perhaps but I am definitely not complaining when as a consumer, I have all to gain and nothing to lose. In my latest two visits I rounded up a table of 10 hungry companions and ordered a feast so massive, it was still so so so so worth it after the discount! Crispy Roasted Pork Cantonese style roasts hardly disappoint and  I particularly liked the crisp skin and jellied pork. Great with mustard especially. Barbecued Peking Duck Now we are talking about the holy grail of roasts, the peking duck. That layer of gloss is worth salivating over. Oh how it glistens when wrapped in egg crepes. I would very much prefer the bun version for more bite. And without further intervention, the peking duck chopped up and displayed. Roasted Crispy Duck We also had a go at the crispy duck which somehow was not as crispy as desired. It just loo...
