Restoran Lapan Dua Dua @ Skudai, Johor Bahru

Since Ya Wang, we have been sold on the dang gui ducks JB has to offer and since we were in the vicinity, why not check out the other disciple? It seems that both owners are disciples of the same master who taught them the recipe. Wall of famed boxes.  This restoran seems a lot more localized, the crowd too were mainly Johoreans and the pricing does reflect that too. RM 55 for a whole herbal duck with chicken rice chilli as a condiment. They also serve up other roasts - chicken and pork too and braised duck. Talk about a full menu. We had this chopped up for our dinner after a long day spent at the customs. It lacked the same fragrance as Ya Wang and the marinate was a lot sweeter. Although the duck is equally tender, I prefer Ya Wang's better. I guess it is back to the drawing board for the next best duck, or back into the arms of Ya Wang for another of those delicious takeaways. Dragon Bowl @ Marina Square

Image
~Invited Session~ I've not actually checked out Marina Square fully after their revamp and there are quite a number of restaurants hidden in these snug corners! Dragon Bowl being one of them, they now have a total of 3 outlets. Every outlet has a different vibe to it and at Marina Square, this outlet has private dining rooms and a bigger capacity to boot. Dragon Bowl unveils 7 new dimsum dishes and an exclusive Peking Duck set! Steamed Crystal Prawn Roll ($4.80) I should have known better when it mentioned "prawn roll", the skin like cheong fun was a tad too thick and it was not sealed so the ingredients fell out. That said, not my choice dimsum. Steamed Laksa "Cheong Fun" with Shrimp ($6.80) I'd have given this top marks for creativity and this was more of shrimp cheong fan in laksa gravy. This was missing out on some curry leaves and belachan otherwise, worth an order to check out the hype! Steamed Xiao Long Bao with Scallop ($5.80) The tip to taking on a ...

Restoran Ya Wang 鸭皇药材烧腊大王 @ Jalan Segget

Famed for their herbal ducks and being the advisor to local chain Dian Xiao Er, business starts at a bright and early 8am and closes at 6pm. Who eats herbal duck in the morning you ask? I had the same burning question yet it seems that throngs of people do, and majority of the tables at breakfast  were already ordering their set menus. Ten Herbal Roast Duck I swear this could be passed off as a roast goose with the crazy crisp glistening skin and layer of fats above the tender duck. The herb bath the duck was soaking in was a tad sweet but there is no stopping any of us from licking the dish clean. Great with rice if not a side of dark sauce mee kia would satisfy those carb cravings. Oodles of joy and boy, one satisfying start to the day ahead! Roasted Pork Char Siew The fatty ratio in these roasted meats were clearly the same or more than the meat and I'm seeing more of this throughout Malaysia and it seems Singaporeans are more cautious about fat in our meats. Loved the char ...

Duck Master @ People's Park Complex

Image
Duck Master since making its appearance on Makansutra has been flooded with orders. $15 a poultry and it ain't the usual roast chicken, we are talking about duck - the perceived higher value of the two. Minimally a two hour wait for the earlier days of the fanaticism, thank goodness they have implemented a queue system for orders to be logged first and collected later. So how does this measure up against all the other roast ducks that are commanding easily double this price? By the way, chopping it up on your own costs an additional $3. Skin was crispy without reheating a good 2 hours after collection, meat was tender yet salty at uneven parts of the duck. I'm not sure how we ended up with 4 drumsticks and no wings, but nobody was complaining! Clearly this is no London Fat Duck which is prized for the amount of fat under the skin, regular roast duck that is smaller than the usual but with an attractive price tag. While many rave about the chilli, it tasted like sweet belachan a...

Lan Ting @ East Coast Road

Image
Having been an Eastie for most part of my life I was pleasantly surprised to stumble upon another new eatery along the stretch of Springvale. Lan Ting, a relatively new restaurant is home to casual cantonese fare. Dine or wine, they have both. Private dining is also available too. Lan Ting's menu has a range of handmade dimsum items as well as dishes and there are a total of 30 items made fresh daily. Steamed Prawn Dumpling with Pork Floss "Har Gow" ($6.80, 4 pieces) Pork floss topping gave this har gow additional bite and crunch. Steamed Black Truffle Pork Dumpling with Quail Egg "Siew Mai" ($6.20, 4 pieces) The surprise for this was in the form of an embedded quail's egg and truffle fragrance. Steamed Rice Roll with Dough Fritter ($7) Also fondly known as Zha Leong, rice roll wrapped around a fried dough fritter stuffed with prawn paste. That in itself is already a mouthful pronouncing, much less eating. Nonetheless, a delicious one. \\\ Mushroom Lava Bu...
