Tamoya Udon Revisited @ Liang Court

Image
~Invited Session~ Tamoya Udon will be launching a curry udon series come November 5, replacing the Umami udon series - boo. For starters I am a fan of that series and have returned so many times just for the uniquely Singapore udon creation. Char Siew Curry Udon ($11.80) Cheese Katsu Curry Udon ($12.80) Both versions are also available in Japan with the curry paste flown in. Toss in carrots and potatoes and a different protein each before serving atop udon noodles. Between chicken katsu cutlet and char siew slices, I liked both equally. Except the former needs a decent appetite to match with all that cheese! Tamoya Udon Liang Court

Tamoya Udon @ Liang Court

~Invited Session~ Udon know how understated the noodles are, until you've tried them. Pun intended. Tamoya Udon hails from Japan and is the brainchild of Tamotsu Kurokawa, a winner on the Japanese cooking show TV Champion. Done fast food style with counters and food gets served in a matter of minutes upon ordering. Orders are prepared almost immediately and I got to witness my udon order. These fried appetizers were tempting enough to warrant a revisit just for them! I've got my eye on those giant crab meat sticks. Their food guarantee. My surprise find includes this condiments corner that is clearly customized for our local palette. My obvious choices. Their new menu additions will be launched on 14 November and this will appeal to diners who favour their noodles dry and strong flavoured! Oooh-mami Udon ($10.80) XO Sauce, Dried Sakura Ebi, Spring Onions, Bonito Flakes Umami indeed with this incredibly fragrant number. I love how the xo sauce and sakura ebi had suc...

Akai Fune @ Singapore Expo

Image
My expeditions to EXPO hardly end on a gourmet note, mainly because the crowds put me off waiting for food during a fair and the ghost town situations only beckon when the food establishments make the trip to the east worthwhile. Akai Fune it was then one fine and dandy day, even at lunch hour it was empty. Gyoza These pot stickers had a skin too thick and fried with too much oil so much so lifting it left an oil drizzle behind. CP would have done the job, much much better. Garlic Pork These char siu slices were overcooked, fell apart from overcooking and was given a jolt of overseasoning with just too much soya sauce and fried garlic. Curry Udon And for Waraku that kickstarted my interest in beef curry udon, I say this was a pathetic far cry - sweet gravy that a Daiso premix would have fared better, clumpy udon noodles, pickled bamboo shoots off a packet, a clearly overcooked onsen egg (where is the runny in this?) and a clump of sweet beef. Sorry, not impressed with this sugar overlo...

Maru Ten Udon @ Parkway Parade

Image
I don't consider myself an udon fan, or perhaps I never had an udon dish that made me crave udon henceforth. For that reason, it ranks as one of the less interesting Japanese dishes I'd rank as tops. Maru Ten Udon at Parkway Parade's Food Republic is a casual style udon shop that also has a ton of other options - think rice bowls and tempura. Until this outlet, I did not actually realise its existence - and surprise, surprise! They already have 5 outlets under their belt. Clear instructions how to order! Pretty simple in fact, it felt like dining canteen style with a tray infront of me. There are 3 sizes for udon, a choice of hot and cold and two different broths varying in levels of savouriness. I picked the medium (1.5 portions of small) and then the fried items. These accompanying dishes are priced from $1 onwards. The udon bowl is passed on you decide how much soup to fill from the dispenser. Fried tamago which turned out too sweet for my liking, should have just gone w...

Ginza Kuroson @ Ngee Ann City

Image
Ginza Kuroson has a second outlet at Ngee Ann City, and strangely I had not considered visiting either till now. Word has it they are known for beef sashimi and affordable chirashi dons during lunch! Barachirashi Don ($22) Portions are generous for a hungry eater, filled with slivers of raw fish and topped with enough roe and that grated wasabi was enough to send me straight to sashimi heaven. For sure not the best bowl eaten but at this price, I am definitely not complaining! Tempura and Udon Set Meal ($35) Flip beyond the pages of the lunch set and arrive at the tempura and udon set, one for the ravenous and so value for money too! The appetizer of minced meat tofu ball served with chilled vegetables was every part delicious and appetizing. Motive achieved! Salad drizzled with wafu dressing is always a welcome addition in the appetizer compartment too!  Udon with tempura  gets served with a choice of warm or hot and both options are equally delicious.   Head for the cold if yo...
