Tien Court Revisited @ Copthorne King's Hotel

Image
We were once wowed by Tien Court but I suppose tastings should not be used as a gauge of its regular performance. This Groupon deal could have impacted the quality of my meal since the basics like appetizers were missing and our supposed "complimentary carpark coupon" barely waived half of the $6 parking fee we incurred for less than 75 minutes at Copthorne King's. Seasonal Vegetables ($18) Stir fried with garlic, this had too much gravy for my liking though I liked the crunch of the greens. Peking Duck ($38, Half Portion) This was the tastiest of the night's orders, crispy skin wrapped in egg crepes and served with cucumbers and spring onions. We could do with more condiments though. Chopped duck unfortunately was a tad dry but nothing sour plum sauce could not save. Salted Egg Prawns ($30) Laced with a certain sweetness that was reminiscent of condensed milk tossed in mashed salted egg yolk, still a decent dish except it got a tad too much for two of us. Grand Pavilion Revisited @ Esplanade

Image
There are restaurants I do not understand why they even need Groupon yet they are consistently on offer. Grand Pavilion is one of those places. Blame the location perhaps but I am definitely not complaining when as a consumer, I have all to gain and nothing to lose. In my latest two visits I rounded up a table of 10 hungry companions and ordered a feast so massive, it was still so so so so worth it after the discount! Crispy Roasted Pork Cantonese style roasts hardly disappoint and  I particularly liked the crisp skin and jellied pork. Great with mustard especially. Barbecued Peking Duck Now we are talking about the holy grail of roasts, the peking duck. That layer of gloss is worth salivating over. Oh how it glistens when wrapped in egg crepes. I would very much prefer the bun version for more bite. And without further intervention, the peking duck chopped up and displayed. Roasted Crispy Duck We also had a go at the crispy duck which somehow was not as crispy as desired. It just loo...

Por Kee Revisited @ Seng Poh Lane

Image
Visiting Por Kee and having a kick out of their food is a gamble always. On some days they are good and others not so, but seems that our luck always ran out when we hit a proper visit and had better luck with takeaways. Nonetheless, it was packed on a Wednesday and faced with an ordering taking dude who decided that the whole universe owed him a living. Peanuts that became my favouritest thing from dinner that night.  Salted Egg Prawns ($22) The original order of cereal prawns got lost somewhere in translation - the order taker insisted he got it right and blamed us for not returning the dish before eating and subsequently, the server who was visibly upset and tried to explain herself. The dramatic turn of events made me wonder - was it him or just kitchen politics that makes people nasty. Anyhow, tuck into the prawns we did. Salted egg prawns it was with crispy shells and a somewhat soggy salted egg coating. Not the best I have had from Por Kee. Deer Meat with Ginger and Onion ($18)...
