Sabio By The Sea @ Quayside Isle

Image
Yonks ago when the Hubba and I were still dating, Sabio Tapas Bar was one of the places we visited during date nights and fast forward years, this visit to Sabio By The Sea was mainly for that bouncy castle they have for kids. Priorities indeed. Croquetas de Jamón ($ 14) Ham Croquettes These were bursting with mashed potato and I'm not complaining one bit. Mayo and potatoes are indeed the lyfe - I could have both all day long. Pan con Tomate ($ 8) Toasted Bread with Tomato I liked this thought this was originally ordered for the children. Crusty bread with a drizzle of olive oil and tomato bread, so simple yet so good! I would replicate this at home. El Pulpo ($24) Grilled Octopus Leg, “Viola” Mash Potato and Paprika No spanish meal is quite complete without giving their grilled octopus a try, this was so tender I would never have guessed it was octopus. Paella de Pescado ($49, for 3-4 pax) Squid, Sea Bass, Mussels, Clams, Shrimps Feeling greedy, we made the wrong decision to g...

Fofo el Wily Revisited @ Central

Image
After this many years, we brought the twoddler back to our favourite Spanish restaurant in Hong Kong and though they have since lost the Michelin star status, we were still looking forward to reminiscing the good old times over our favourite dishes. While the outlook remained largely same same as before, the vibes could have changed? Less crowded and hectic. After having these toasted bruschettas with tomato paste, I realized I should have ordered some bikinis to share as well on hindsight. So crunchy and light, I would not have minded seconds at all if they obliged. "Cochinollo" Crispy Suckling Pig (HKD 235) Baby confit potatoes, onions, tomato cake, suckling pig sauce This time we had it as a mains and the portions are still as puny as ever. Four pieces for ala carte and two for set dinner. Despite the puniness of this, it was all the good things happening in a tiny package. Brussel Sprouts with Cabbage, Black Garlic, Jerusalem Artichoke Cream (HKD 128) Pricey buttery ki...

Gourmet Plus @ Frankel Avenue

Image
I would have never thought that Gourmet Plus would be home to Spanish-French style cooking. Infact, until I was seated and browsed the menu did it then strike me they offered more than just Spanish food. To think they have been around for ages, and I've been passing it by so many times. Chalkboard specials and I was already drooling over the USDA Prime Rib! Garlic Clams in White Wine Sauce ($14) I have a weakness for white wine clams and these were so juicy inspite of its size and the broth was so rich and tasty. Seconds please! Valencia Paella ($35) Chicken, Prawns, Chorizo Chorizo was sold out so we ended up with a chicken and prawn paella and a 25 minute wait. Portions are good for a very hungry one otherwise it filled both of us pretty well (considering we also had other mains!). Sour cream is the key ingredient in paella, akin to the icing on top of the cake. I enjoyed these sour cream and saffron coated rice grains. Chorizo would definitely have made this the best course of ...

UNA @ Rochestor

Image
I hardly patronize One Rochestor much somehow, though it was marketed as the next Dempsey. UNA at One Rochester presents fresh authentic tapas and grills in a chill-out al fresco garden setting. I remember attending an event in their alfresco seating area before, loved the ambience but the heat does get to you after awhile. Best to visit at night when temperatures are alot more cooling. Gotta love them chairs! Drinks at their canopies are also possible, gives an out of city vibe which reasonates very well with the working crowd and TGIF. Heading indoors to hide away from the heat is always wise but these are the hottest reserved tables on a Friday night especially. Dining in heat is not exactly fun per se. Walnut bread and breadstick basket. Suckling pig ($38) Crispy roast suckling pig served with mashed potatoes and quince jelly Famous for their whole suckling pigs, this was definitely a tasting portion of what to expect. Perhaps it was the parts that we were served, it hit the notes...

Brunch with a Passion @ Catalunya

Image
It was christmas and I was keen on a fun christmas day brunch - Catalunya came to mind with an exciting "Brunch with a Passion" concept - comes with a bingo game, a spread of spanish delights and an afternoon of fun. It felt like a semi-buffet instead of the publicized full buffet. Here's the breakdown of how $98++ totalled, Amuse Bouche Toasted and lathered with tomato paste. Free flow of antipastis, bread, eggs and bikinis A table of food, literally with the spread of appetizers available. Whilst refills were tardy, hot favourites were clearcut - Crabmeat salad Real chunky crabmeat used, I made a nosedive for them - so delicious with the salad dressing and salad leaves. Potatoes and eggs Served on a bed of roasted potatoes, this came with either fried or scrambled eggs with ham, mushrooms and chorizo. Appetizing but one can only eat that many eggs and potatoes. Truffle Bikinis These crispy and cheesy aromatic truffle bikinis are also available on the ala carte men...
