Akanoya Robatayaki @ Orchard Parade Hotel

Image
Enter the world of robatayaki, without prices. A slippery road to undertake, honestly because one is playing guess work with the cashier and many a time letting the stomach dictate what the wallet can afford is a humongous gamble. Yet, this gamble paid off for a special occasion. Pick from the produce infront of you. Far and wide range of ingredients.  This is how they reach for the food! All eyes on kinki fish, perhaps next visit! Someone's mangled kinki fish.  Even when raw, these look so good. A trio of sauces is placed infront of me, let the gastronomy begin! Stewed salmon as an appetizer, tasty but I was not expecting a dish not easy to eat with all the bones. Eggplant ($22) There is something about miso paste and eggplants that automatically becomes a must order each time opportunity presents itself. Is it the savoury paste or sweetness of the eggplant that works, I know not but this became one of the must orders. Garlic ($20) Ok, first I baulked at the size and subsequentl...

Shirokiya @ Chijmes

Image
Shirokiya at Chijmes probably does not stand out in the row of Japanese eats - competition is stiff amongst ramen, steamboat and barbeque even. Kimchi Nabe ($39.90) It is strange how I ended up being addicted to their kimchi hotpot, in a Japanese place no less! Meant for 2-3, depending how big an appetite you have but this fed two of us reasonably well. Watching my hotpot sizzle was therapeutic somewhat and made me really hungry. The best part of their kimchi is, it is not too acidic and infact was well balanced in flavours. All eyes on the pork belly getting cooked, slurpworthy rolls of fat and meat! The robust kimchi flavour soaked through every bite and I would recommend ordering a rice set to go with this. Towards the end, the rich broth and rice would serve as the perfect meal ending. Pork Belly ($9) It was so good, we had to have refills of the pork belly. Second portions somehow tasted better! Pancake ($5.90) Mainly cabbage and egg, I say stick with additional pork belly refi...

Salt Tapas & Bar Revisited @ Raffles City

Image
~Invited Session~ I secretly like tapas for dinner, infact, I can have tapas for dinner. The small bites and variety keeps me a happy diner. Salt Tapas and Bar has recently undergone a kitchen makeover, one that saw freshblood joining, Chef Ronald Li hails from the kitchens of previously known Ku De Ta and the likes of Andre and even the prestigious Le Cordon Bleu school. The menu at Salt Tapas and Bar has seen a number of changes, re-creations mainly and the dishes have Mediterranean influences. Taco of Tempura Prawn, Pineapple Salsa, Chipotle Mayo ($12) These taco shells are pierced with a tooth pick and filled with a tempura prawn and relish. Delicious with that dollop of spicy mayo, infact, I would be happy to wolf down all three of them. Pork Belly Sliders, Pickled Cucumber and Chilli ($13) Buns made for eating with my hands, the jellied pork belly slices were heaven in each of these. No pain, no pleasure - the pain of wishing there were more. Bone Marrow with Shitake Duxelle,...
