Famous Kitchen Delivers!

Image
~Mediadrop~ Covid-19 definitely changed the food and beverage industry drastically and food deliveries have been the way to go since Circuit Breaker started. I was sent this delivery by the kind folks from Famous Kitchen and they were served piping hot! Major brownie points there. Deep Fried Pork Belly with Fermented Beancurd ($20) Marinated with nam yu, these deep fried pork belly cubes make a tasty snack. Great with beer! Roasted Irish "Silver Hill" Duck ($78) Roasted ducks are my weakness and these travelled well, the meat was still very tender and juicy. Traditional Fish Head Curry ($65) The portions are big for a whole fish head curry that comes with a medley of vegetables. Think brinjal, carrots, cabbage and beancurd skins. I found the gravy a tad sweet though. The generous portion makes this a super value for money dish! Signature Yellow Chives Char Kuay Teow ($36)  The second dish that travelled so well, I love the char and smokeyness of the dish. Who'd think that...

Live Seafood Market @ Emporium Shokuhin

Image
~Invited Session~ Emporium Shokuhin welcomes the 10th restaurant - Live Seafood Market Dining, where diners can have their seafood fresh from the tanks and enjoyed zichar style without the heat and chaos of an eating house. What's more? Prices are kept the same for seafood in the same tank and you get to pick exactly which fish or crab suits your meal better. The range comprises not just of seafood but also vegetables and also caviar, parma ham and cured meats. A bar is also available for those seeking a happy hour drink and some tapas. Spied a crab trying to make an escape! Simple instructions how to order your meal at this pseudo zichar place. Beers on the tap for happy hour always seem to go very well with zichar. Crispy Cereal Egg Floss Calamari ($15) was an addictive snack with enough crispy cereal, chilli padi and floss to coat the battered calamari generously. Purple Sweet Potatoe s that made the pre-dinner snacking healthier than intended. Sri Lankan Crab ($59/pc, app...

Kok Sen Restaurant Revisited @ Keong Siak Road

Image
Keong Siak Road is every foodie and photographer's dream, after sun down the street comes alive, literally. It always bewilders me how the present and past can coexist in a single street and still have mass appeal. By day Kok Sen is the budget lunch corner for office workers who'd brave the merciless heat for a pocket friendly yet filling lunch. By night, this morphs into a completely different animal - louder, brasher and characteristic of a chinatown hawker. I mean I cannot imagine in my wildest dreams having a flawless service encounter in an old restaurant, it's almost...unbelievable. We get allocated a table all the way next to the kitchen, even with the dust cluttered fan blades whirling, the heat still got to us. This is a result of advance bookings and on a popular celebratory date known as Mother's Day. I love how there is no fuss at these eating houses - none of the appetizer nonsense that gets ignored anyway. It's just plastic chopsticks and a stack of ...

Por Kee Revisited @ Seng Poh Lane

Image
Visiting Por Kee and having a kick out of their food is a gamble always. On some days they are good and others not so, but seems that our luck always ran out when we hit a proper visit and had better luck with takeaways. Nonetheless, it was packed on a Wednesday and faced with an ordering taking dude who decided that the whole universe owed him a living. Peanuts that became my favouritest thing from dinner that night.  Salted Egg Prawns ($22) The original order of cereal prawns got lost somewhere in translation - the order taker insisted he got it right and blamed us for not returning the dish before eating and subsequently, the server who was visibly upset and tried to explain herself. The dramatic turn of events made me wonder - was it him or just kitchen politics that makes people nasty. Anyhow, tuck into the prawns we did. Salted egg prawns it was with crispy shells and a somewhat soggy salted egg coating. Not the best I have had from Por Kee. Deer Meat with Ginger and Onion ($18)...

Sum Kee Food @ Telok Blangah Street

Image
I am always on the look out for zichar places to add to my comfort list, partly because too much restaurant food can kill the appetite. #firstworldproblems Next to Por Kee, I have yet to find another that I can count on regardless of day and time of the week. Sum Kee Food fell under the radar after a particular instagram post by a fellow foodie - How I love social media for its no secrets policy - I mean good food is for sharing. Located in a building that also has a clinic, ask around and be directed to the large restaurant.  Ultra Man Chicken ($10) With the salted egg craze going strong recently, this salted egg fried chicken topped the list for sin. Doused in a savoury salted egg sauce these bite sized fried chicken pieces were a tough contender for addictive beer snacks. Hot Plate Tofu ($10) Sizzling hot dish of tofu and egg, worth the theatrics I say! Yam Ring ($18) Another old school dish that I started eating since a kid and we all marvel at the beauty of the yam ring. This w...

Two Chefs Eating Place Revisited @ Commonwealth

Image
Since our eventful first visit to Two Chefs, we actually have not been back for awhile and thank goodness for phone reservations, we managed to score a table with some waiting time. The queues never seem to end with every visit and I suppose Singaporeans are most willing to travel and wait for good food. Almost serving the supper crowd with shutters closing at almost midnight. The queues persisted without signs of stopping throughout dinner. Herbal Chicken Soup A simple chicken in foil was actually harbouring enough soup to feed six of us fully and that tender chicken so easily teased apart.    3 Egg Spinach ($14) Threesomes are hardly fun but for this 3 egg spinach, I thought i was well done and downright delicious!   Cereal Prawn ($20) Unabashedly, laziness always gets the better of me when it comes to polishing off this dish. I eat my prawns whole - shell, innards, all. Does help that the cereal mixture is particularly tasty. Chilli Lala ($12) Another ultimate favourite zi char...
