Zui Yu Xuan @ Far East Square

Image
~Invited Session~ Jumbo Group welcomes a new member in their stable of offerings - meet Zui Yu Xuan, specializing in Teochew classics. Replacing another chinese restaurant, Zui Yu Xuan takes over the same spot with the same ambiance and feels about the place. Specially curated art pieces adorn the walls and we head up to recce the private dining rooms. I was shown one that has a corner for tea ceremony too! Private rooms like these are available for hiring and even has a corner for tea ceremony too! Their rooms are equipped with a KTV system so be prepared to sing your lungs out. Prior to our dinner, we had a peek into how tea is prepared. Chado, is definitely far more complex than I remember it to be. The beauty of tea brewing is, it teaches a whole universe of patience, from simmering to washing away the first pour to finally sipping it. Cold Crab ($12 per 100g) Steamed and chilled, that simple? But no, this was excellent - meaty, packed with roe and so much flav...

Red Hat Char Koay Teow @ Lorong Selamat, Penang

Image
I definitely was not ambitious in my CKT hunt this time, infact I only had 1 on my list to track down. Red Hat's and how glad was I that there was not only no queue, the weather was within acceptable comfort limits.  Spot the cafe with the CKT signage fronting the stall.  Since I flew into the country, I had to go big or go home. RM 12.50 it had to be!  I wish I could catch the old lady in action but turns out the younger man would be cooking us a storm instead. Lots of lard and frying over this well greased wok. Expectations were set high.  Of all that I've eaten, this definitely tops the list for wok hei, lard and the amazing bit about it is - it hardly tastes oily! So satisfying too with those large curled up prawns, I wish he'd go easier on the bicarbonate.  Red Hat CKT Heng Huat Café, Lorong Selamat

Penang Hawker's Fare @ York Hotel

Image
~Invited Session~ Penang food is York Hotel and the association has been there for the longest time ever - even the mothership knows and that speaks volumes. For the diehards, news had probably already got out way before the tasting since the restaurant was packed and for the unaware, the Penang Hawker's Fare runs thrice a year and for 2017, we begin with the instalment from March 10-26. I love Penang and have plans for a return just for the street food which in my opinion, rivals that of Bangkok and Hongkong even. 12 stalls are on standby to whisk you away to endless helpings of mouthwatering dishes. Not forgetting free flow of bandung and calamansi drinks too! Duck Porridge Since 2014, this has been the highlight and is served with tender braised duck meat, pig's innards and topped with ginger strips and spring onions which gives this an added bite. The generous lashings of braised meat gravy made this extra comforting too! Penang Laksa Laksa in Malaysia are completely dif...
