Pho Street Revisited @ Bedok Mall

Image
I randomly paid Pho Street at Bedok Mall a visit and I'd have to say I am surprised how many likeminded diners there are at 11ish am. Who else eats early lunches on weekends too? Chicken Pho ($8.90) Beef Pho ($8.90) Without a doubt between chicken and beef, I am a beef fan. Especially for pho, the latter has a more robust flavour. That said, those in Singapore are definitely more localized and this is miles away from the sugar sweet grassy raw authentic version. Mango Salad ($6.90) Crunchy mango salad with a sprinkling of seafood. Their version is a tad sour with the vinaigrette dressing but still refreshing. Snack Platter ($8.90) Probably microwaved and that's how I ended up with chewy thai fish cakes, lukewarm satays and overfried spring rolls. Vietnamese food here is very localised and probably not as authentic as Wrap and Roll even. A decent place for lunch to be settled, just not quite for taste. Pho Street B1-40, Bedok Mall

Wrap and Roll Revisited @ Changi City Point

Image
I've somehow stopped checking out the neighbourhood Vietnamese food joints and have stuck with those on the comfort food list - read Wrap and Roll in a shopping mall. Minced Pork and Mushrooms steamed Rice Rolls ($3.50) These remind me a lot of cheong fun, only way stickier. Tamarind Chicken Wings ($7.90) This Changi City Point exclusive is really worth seconds, sticky and sweet but not in a cloying manner. It's definitely worth getting my fingers dirty over - the only thing is consuming them piping hot! Lotus Shoot Salad with Prawns ($8.90) I love these Vietnamese salads, and it is strange how I actually relish these pickled vegetables in my salad. Lotus shoot, prawns and a dash of the appetizing dressing, you got me sold. Grilled Lemongrass Chicken Baguette ($6.90) Bahn Mis are up my alley though this is a poor man's baguette, the bite is hollow and perhaps almost not filling enough for hungry diners. That said, I enjoyed the pickles once again, mayo and pate lathered chi...

Saigon Boy Express @ Icon Village

Image
Within CBD, there are probably as many pho shops as there are salad shops. I'm not sure what correlation there is but I am not complaining. Saigon Boy promises Australian Vietnamese food from the heart, so those seeking the authentic Vietnamese experience will be shown the pho but that said, I already liked the forthrightness of this new kid on the block. Barely a month old and it is packed during lunch hours, I look forward to more meals. Lemongrass Pork and Prawn Rice Paper Rolls ($5) Rice vermicelli cleverly draped over prawns and lemongrass pork and secured with nori, Spicy Pulled Pork Burrito with Sriracha and Sour Cream ($5) The same spicy pulled pork as featured in the bahn mi, turns out the burrito was a better fit with it.   Fried Spring Rolls ($5) Bamboo Chicken Spring Rolls with Plum and Mint Dipper The dough was a tad too thick and minced chicken almost lost in the dough but the  plum and mint was a refreshing surprise at the bottom of the jar. The Beef Eater ($9) Be...

Wrap and Roll @ Changi City Point

Image
I have had my fair share of dining in Vietnam and a number of Vietnamese joints here too but Wrap and Roll had been under the radar for a while, especially when it comes from a chain, I was exceptionally wary. The curse of food chains maybe? Changi City Point is a ghost town of its own and perhaps a saving grace for the business park staff. For a friday night and a huge expo event going on and it was barely filled I held with bated breath how dinner would end up. Table condiments of local sambal and imported yellow chillies caught my eye. Spicier than chilli padi and so shiok when it burns! No wonder this canister was emptied at most tables. Ours included by the end of the meal. Iced Coffee ($5.30) Intense and the best of vietnam consumed, in a strange manner. Of all places here actually. Crispy Prawn Pancakes ($3.90, 2 pieces) I liked this least of the appetizers, the oily pancake was a tad too thick and the prawn cake was really just fish cake.  Taste of Hanoi Appetizer Platter ...

L'Euphoriz @ AXA Tower

Image
Vietnamese food with a french flair is what differentiates L'Euphoriz from the other Vietnamese joints around though the menu is mainly vietnamese with the typical staples like rice rolls, pho and coffee. Bahn mi was significantly missing from the menu.  Beef Skewers ($14) Sweetened beef satay on a stick, well at least the portions of meat on the satay stick far trumps those eaten at a hawker center. Loved the pickled radish and carrots that came with it, an appetizing start I must say! Beef Combination Pho ($14) Beef Tenderloin, Beef Brisket, Beef Balls Broth simmered for 8 hours with vietnamese spices and served with rice noodles. I found the broth still lacking in flavour inspite the 8 hour simmering. That said, the meat portions were generous and proved a hearty relief! An average joint in the heart of CBD, great to shy away from the sweltering heat and manageable crowds. L'Euphoriz #01-21,, Shenton Way, AXA Tower

Mrs Pho Revisited @ Beach Road

Image
We caught the Mrs Pho bug and made a number of revisits to try as many dishes as possible, in our true obsessive style. Late lunch and early dinners seem to work well in terms of queues, waiting time and more comfortable dining conditions. Hanoi Pork Meat Balls ($3.50) Listed as Mamma's secret recipe, I could not wait to unravel the mystery behind this. Juicy meatballs with sweet glaze and topped with spring onions and chopped peanuts. It then dawned on me how meat skewers are part of our asian cuisine, regardless country. Fresh Prawn and Pork Spring Roll ($3.50) Served with bean paste sauce, this raw vegetable spring roll fared better than the fried and also meatballs for me. Loved the crunch of this! Special Beef Combination Soup ($8.90) This always ends up a must order for me and I get reluctant to try any other dishes. So slurpworthy and self seasoning is always recommended as the soup base is characteristically sweet as with most Vietnamese dishes.   Viet Crab, Prawn and Minc...

Mrs Pho @ Beach Road

Image
Mrs Pho at Beach Road has been gaining a strong following - a hole in wall eatery that easily sits thirty quite uncomfortably but that has not stopped throngs from paying homage. We shyed away from the weekend lunch hour and arrived at 2pm, only to be met by a crowded restaurant. Almost skin to skin in such proximity.  There is something about the minimalistic, lack of decor and finesse that makes the outlet charming. A single foldable menu with all the gems - look up to the walls for specials too! We had a hard time deciding what to eat simply because everything sounded so delicious. Organic Vietnamese Coffee ($3) Something about these chinese designed sauce plates, so chingchong but I'm lovin' them!  Vietnamese Papaya Salad with Prawn and Pork ($6.50) Move over thai salad, here is one that piques the senses and tastebuds hugely! The tangy sauce with the tart papaya slices and smattering of fried onions and herbs promises an unforgettable appetizer. Fried Pork Spring Roll ($3)...
