Seafood Don @ Iriya, Tokyo

Image
On a holiday, I seem to have an extra stomach to accommodate my meal plan and more. Not that dinner was not filling but why not when it was just 540 JPY? Seconds before I snapped the photo, they turned off the lights. We were the last customers for the day - at 8pm no less. Iriya, as mentioned in my earlier post, seems to be a sleepy residential area where hustle and bustle eludes it. None of the Ginza frenzy nor tourists in sight - just what I love actually. Lady with handkerchief and an apron made it feel like I stepped into someone's house. Sushi cake anyone? What are the odds of having seafood bowls all a single price and we could do upgrades too! Seems like foreigners have already discovered this gem hence the English translations. Sea Urchin and Egg Don (JPY 540) For the price I definitely cannot complain - at HKD 50 I got enough sea urchin to fill the brim of my handroll and a cheaper price in Tokyo, I can actually have enough sea urchin to cover my rice bowl. Loved the vin...

Terra Seita @ Tras Street

Image
My date at Terra Seita was met with a closed tag because we arrived 10 minutes too early and the manager was still briefing his staff before dinner service. No complaints except nobody came to the door either. Subsequently, we were asked for our reservation name before we were invited into the restaurant. First impressions? I was far from impressed. The visit came to fruition not because of its michelin starred achievement but because of its Japanese-Italian cuisine that has been popular over the last couple of years. The restaurant is limited in space, cosy corners are almost non existent and my privacy was as good as this arm's length. Table set up. Our affable waiter comes by to introduce himself, spots my camera and decides to make small talk about food blogging and I got lost in his rumblings somehow. My hand towel that stopped wowing after the first encounter. We get shown the day's freshest catch before the menu card is shown. Four menus up for selection ($128, $168 and ...

Shinji by Kanesaka Revisited @ Raffles Hotel

Image
A revisit to Shinji was definitely on the cards but it is not everyday one gets a chance to. Availability is fleeting and of course, the price tag. If one day every meal cost the same as Shinji, I would probably own Seah Street. Lunches are priced a fraction of dinner, starting from $75 and goes all the way up to $250 for Omakase. Granted the clientele of Shinji have mostly deep pockets, I was just surprised how many there are. Details, details. Spring onion and seaweed, an unconventional pairing yet I enjoyed that biting heat from the onions and savoury seaweed. The best thing about counter seats is I get to watch the chefs work. Hi Chef! I did not manage to get his name but watching him prepare my sushi was therapy. Eating with my hands is the best way to consume sushi. My Hana course ($75) entitled me to 9 pieces of sushi, nigiri, handroll and dessert. Superbly fresh sashimi adorned my sushi, and surely I cannot find better words to say how far in sushi kingdom I have arrived. ...
