Wheelhouse Revisited @ The Tanglin Club

Image
I love dining at the recreational clubs because of the great value meals they offer. Surely the membership fees count towards discounted food but that said, I still love a good deal when I see it. Wheelhouse at Tanglin Club is a casual bistro style family restaurant with no age restrictions (this is especially important when baby is in tow).  Their $15.90 salad buffet was the steal. Freshly baked bread which comprised of bread rolls, artisanal loaves and even bread sticks with the must try herb butter. This has been the winning combination for me since the day I discovered the magic of these two together. And pile on the salads we did. The combinations were endless and even the self toss station for rojak was delicious. I love mine laden with enough prawn paste for the extra punch and more pineapples and tau pok instead of cuttlefish. On top of all the greens, there was a hot dish of the day. These oxtails were the bomb - meaty and jellied goodness all gone in a single slurp. The most ...

The Victoria Room @ The Cricket Club

I cherish each of these CNY foodscapades to The Cricket Club when the rest of the world is tossing to yusheng, black moss mushroom claypots and eating lotus leaf glutinous rice for the nth time this festive season. Indian food is their forte and amidst all the gluttony, a visit to TCC is a breath of fresh air. Mulligatawny Soup ($6.50) So hearty, this is curry in a soup topped with rice grains. Arguably, the best Singapore has to offer. Palak Paneer ($8.90) Cottage cheese cooked in spinach Spinach and cheese only goes so well if it's a palak paneer and the chef definitely did it justice. Aloo Gobi ($8.90) Cauliflower, potatoes, onions, tomato Vegetables cooked too soft but nothing is stopping me from licking the gravy pot clean. Southern Indian Fish Curry ($12.90) Spices, eggplant, lady finger, tomato Crisp fried fish cutlets in a tangy gravy. I could do with more spice but this was comforting even without. SCC Chicken and Egg Curry ($12.90) Pickles, Papadum Another of those sur...

The Oval Revisited @ Singapore Cricket Club

That particular week was spent trying a total of three different mulligatawny soups and we still preferred Cricket Club's - and seconds within a week. The system must have been shocked with so many spices. SCC Mulligatawny Soup ($6.90) Being reunited with this was sheer happiness, thick spicy curry broth makes this liquid curry so addictictive, it can completely be passed off as a mains on its own. Club Sandwich ($11.90) Chicken, Bacon, Egg, Lettuce, Tomato and French Fries Barely club sandwich as I would call it with more bread than ingredients. The fries were good though. Bhindi Do Pyaza ($7.90) Lady finger stir-fried with onions and chat masala Trust the Indians to embrace ladies fingers with much aplomb, this dry curry dish enough joy for me to love curry vegetables wholeheartedly. Tandoori Chicken ($9.90) Somehow the tandoori chicken was more salty than the other curry dishes, the over marination was hinging on unpleasant. Basmati ($3) Good enough for 2, very comfortably. Pale...

Tavern Revisited @ The Tanglin Club

Image
Bar counters always intrigue me, especially when they belong to establishments with history under its belt. The Tanglin Club, was one of the pillars of social life in Singapore for successful members of the European community and still is one of the places to see and be seen. My own dad spent a great deal of his younger days at this bar over drinks, salted anchovies and peanuts.  I have a strange affliction for heavily starched and pristine white stiff table napkins. Salad, Soup and Dessert Buffet ($14.80) I usually do not think much of soups at buffets, and scoffed at this greenie which turned out to be the most delicious on the buffet spread. Chunky soup with green pea bits and croutons, a winning recipe! The selection of cold cuts and salads were limiting and there was also a portion for sushi and breads too. Overall a worthwhile buffet for those who want a detox! Crab Croquettes ($10.95) Romesco Sauce Breaded crab croquettes which put the highly priced ones to shame, these plump c...

The Oval Revisited @ Singapore Cricket Club

Back at Singapore Cricket Club for our annual pig out session - usually clubs are more forgiving in terms of prices during CNY. Armed with an unbeatable view of the Padang and MBS not too faraway, apart from the views and architecture, nostalgia is the reason why we keep returning year after year. The pieces of history that makes visiting Singapore Cricket Club special. SCC Mulligatawny Soup ($6.90) Famed for Mulligatawny Soup, I wonder why it took me so long to discover its presence. A spicy curry broth sprinkled with rice grains and onions. For the curry lover in me, I lapped it all up - and hardly do I enjoy liquid curries without meat. Now, where can I find an equivalent beyond the walls of this club? Rojak ($7.20) Chef probably did not dilute the prawn paste enough when he dunked it on a pile of ingredients. Too heavy and chunky. SCC Cheese Toast ($5.90) Crisps and Coleslaw Mozzarella cheese on toast with chillies and onions, such is the simple bliss of sandwich eating back in my...
