Cafe de l'ambre @ Ginza, Tokyo

Image
Cafe de l'ambre has been serving coffee since 1948 and what sets this apart from the hipster coffee joints is, it is so well hidden that I did not realise Ginza had such a hidden yet charming gem. Jars of different types of aged beans. Roasting is done on-site and the aroma was intoxicating. Snippets of accolades from the past to present. The whole cafe exudes a certain vibe that traps time, as if I got transported back in time to 1948. Perhaps it was deliberate, and perhaps it wasn't but everything was dated. Even this bar counter that had seats with a swivel. Suddenly, ordering coffee over a bar counter like that became very hip. A mishmesh of assorted pieces put together in this open concept kitchen. Hand dripped coffee was what we came for and it was very intense watching the bartender manually drip the coffee in a fascinating robotic manner. Was it the obsession with the craft? Or just a whole lot of passion that keeps him going.Well, maybe both. The coffee only menu sho...

Davide Coffee Stop @ Iriya, Tokyo

Image
Iriya is a charming residential area in Tokyo and had it not been for dinner nearby, I'd probably not bother to check it out. We stumbled upon this cosy coffee join whilst walking to dinner - talk about distractions. I was drawn by their tiffany blue tiles and window sills. I'm not sure if the bartender is the owner, or if he is in any relation to Davide. Anyhow meet Mister moutasche, a little too cool for my liking but he speaks fluent English. Armed with a serious air (to us English speakers, he was completely friendly when speaking in Japanese), we made or two orders of coffee. Tip or treat? The husband was drawn to this Italian coffee maker, whilst I just loved the colours. Single shot espresso and a black coffee. Both dark knights in their shining armours exuding an aromatic charm. I am no coffee connoisseur but these packed enough oil and roast in a cuppa We found ourselves cosy seats in the attic floor - mind those stairs, bringing up my own cuppa was a balancing act of...

Toby's Estate @ Rodyk Street

Image
Toby's Estate was perhaps one of the first few cafes back then when Singapore was swept over by a cafe storm. I'm not sure why I have not blogged about it since I have paid so many visits to this place! Brekkie of Champions ($25) Eggs, Espresso Maple Bacon, Tomato, Mushrooms, Beans, Harissa Sausage, Brioche A bigger version of big breakfast with everything a brunch appetite needs. This probably needs no further introduction on how hearty and wholesome it is because I have problems finishing it on my own. The New Tobias Burger ($25) 150g Beef Patty, Spanish Onion, Greens, Emmental, Chipotle Mayo Brioche Buns, Fries (Gently Spicy) Without trying the older version of Tobias Burger, this was another of those beef burgers with melted cheese and fries. Only this was actually really delicious, it could have been the chipotle mayo brioche bun or the medium well done patty that made all the difference. Of the two mains, I enjoyed this way better. Long Black ($4) Options are not wide...

Restoran Kin Hua Revisited @ Jalan Hiok Nee

Image
I'm not sure about the other JB trippers, what is the main driving force apart from cheap and good food?  Each visit leaves me enthralled - there is so much across the causeway offers in terms of nostalgic eats. For that reason, I wish these could stay on forever. Restoran Kin Hua is one of those places. Their idea of open concept is completely out in the open. All eyes on the toaster and those buns. And in that flurry of activity, they get slapped on with butter and a copious amount of kaya - mamma mia. Looking alot flatter than the last delicious attempt but I am still a huge fan of this dripping wet morning toast. There is just something about grilled buns and kaya that makes me proud to be South East Asian. Coffee served in such porcelain cups are truly a thing of the past - or in Singapore, we have to pay through our noses for the equivalent. Coffee stained cups - so old school! Liquid gold, the caffeine addicts all muse in varying degrees of darkness. As black as midnight, t...

The Coffee Cart @ Lavender

Image
The only reason why I even got acquainted with Lavender is because of my Zumba class and Tai Hwa Bak Chor Mee. The best deal is often struck by exercising then indulging with far less guilt.   Spot the tiny coffee shop that can easily be missed. Operating literally out of a coffee cart. And an uber cuddly teddy bear to match. Minimalistic decor with few tables too. A cappucino for your cravings? The coffee was not spectacular, pretty much ordinary the caffeine drinkers mused. And a rainbow cake that was made of natural colouring that looked half as cheerful as the other cakes in the marketplace. Tastewise it was also slightly disappointing, very dense and missing out on some fluffiness. Portions were incredibly small as well. That, summed up my experience at Coffee Cart. Barely exciting nor memorable. Sigh, another that bites at the dust. The Coffee Cart 465 Crawford Ln, # 01-08
