Crave Unlimited Bespoke Cake

Image
Celebrating the sis' birthday is never a single day's affair and maybe because I already create such a huge hullaballoo...the cake definitely has to live up to expectations too right? This year I went all out on cute and going over the top cute with Crave Unlimited's signature Tsum Tsum cake. The ladies were so accomodating with my queries. All hand moulded, these fondant figurines looked soooo cute and none can be eaten of course, which was a waste. Beneath the beautiful exterior is layers of surabaya cake and strawberry jam with nutella. Not too bad a cake actually given how between looks and taste, something does have to give. Prices start from $138 for these beauties!

Strawberry Shortcake by Ten Butter Fingers

Image
The special man's birthday came and expectations were high on this one - a great pity our favourite baker could not bake this time so we scrambled to find another. Thank goodness Ten Butter Fingers could take our order and this time we tried her other hotselling flavour - strawberry shortcake disguised under whipped cream and a pororo topper. Can you spot the stars, golden sparkles and a Pororo fire truck - so apt since we went to visit a fire station just the day itself! At dinner and ready to be cut! Made with Japanese strawberries, I love how the strawberries are sweet, juicy and none of the tangy tongue biting sour berries that are characteristic of strawberries from the States. The lightly sweetened sponge was just perfect for the toddler who's not really had much table food save for birthday cakes during celebrations in school. Plus, whipped cream is definitely a better alternative to buttercream and fondant - my order of preference. Chiffon and strawberry shortcake check...

Ten Butter Fingers' Yuzu Chiffon

Image
Yuzu and chiffon in a single description is my weakness. How strange it is though that every trip to Japan I've not had the heart or willpower to empty my pocket for their produce and then return to pay for these fruity treats. Irony, if you ask me. By a stoke of luck, I got acquainted with Ten Butter Fingers and scored a booking of her Mother's Day special. Yuzu Chiffon with edible flowers was such a beaute! My Mom is not a fan of blooms so this design incorporates just that, have your flowers and eat them! Each of her creations are different with a totally different look and feel though they are all florals. The fragrance is intoxicating, that wafts of citrus that is all of sweet and refreshing. The cake itself is fluffy like clouds and all was going so fine and dandy until the whipped cream ended up heavier than I expected. I had way more than my usual portion because the cake was simply too yummy and it is chiffon! An indulgence without the full sinful package. Jenny, the b...

Happy Birthday with Afters Bakery

Image
Happy Birthday to me with this clearly too cute for my age cake - and thank you for always answering that inner child. Unbeknownst, the ladies behind the last birthday cake rebranded and by a stoke of fate, I had my cake in the same flavor! What are the odds. We learnt this year and had it chilled and boy, it tastes heaps better. Their salted caramel cake is a butter sponge with salted caramel drizzled over whipped cream between layers. The macarons were too crispy, I prefer mine with some density. These snapped into a mouthful of sugar.

Another bespoke cake by Twentysevenbyrachel

I knew somehow, somewhere and someday I will be checking off all cake flavours on Rachel's menu - talk about being an ardent fan. Jokes aside, when I first saw this design on her feed I knew that it was the cake I wanted and all other designs I was considering were clearly out of the window because she nailed it so beautifully! And that's the thing with inspired cakes because they are same same but different and hardly 100% the same as I have at the back of my mind. Since when did buying a cake morph into such a complex process, huh? My brief to her was erm, girly, whimsical and pastel-ly and  doesn't she look gorgeous? Anyway design selected and it came to cake flavor - almost no brainer here because the birthday girl adores chocolate to death. How aptly was this named death by chocolate! Her best seller infact, so moist, rich, dark and...truly death by chocolate it promised. I cannot stop starring at the cross section, to think the icecream scoop was a cakepop in d...

Galaxy Cake by Twentysevenbyrachel

Image
You can almost say Twentysevenbyrachel is my to go for bakes these days, and what more when the little man's celebratory cake? I was almost jumping for joy when she opened for cake orders and I'm thankful she agreed despite this completely not being her style of cake design either. With just two flavours to pick from, I opted for the somewhat more complex sounding Yuzu almond cake with yuzu curd and toasted coconut butter cream. For my own first birthday, my parents picked an old fashioned chocolate cake whilst the Hubba had a fresh fruit cream cake. So I guess the way to celebrate in the 21st century would be something fancier? Plus, yuzus are a favourite if not for a fact that they are so costly! Two tiers to accomodate my ridiculously disproportionate topper and his first tiered cake! The experience was definitely fuss free and very smooth, and the galaxy cake was created with as little food colouring as possible (HOORAY!). Spot the milkyway! Heavy as can be, I was so afra...

Unicorn Cake @ Patisserie Atelier

Image
The great thing about growing older is I get indulged in by the family and best of all, be surprised by cake! Gone are the days where the over the counter cakes intrigue me, infact my heart goes out to those trying to surprise me, but that said...this year's cake was a surprise well planned even though the restaurant deemed it "unsuitable" for their fridge. Anyhow...my first and possibly not the last unicorn cake! Salted caramel buttercream cake! Honestly, this tasted way better on the second day after collection, the first day rendered the cake and cream not so compatible. I usually shun the buttercream like plague yet this was finger licking so yummy, and that salted caramel with a lovely salty hint to it. May the coming year be unicorns and ponies awesome possom! http://www.patisserieatelier.com/
