Hill Street Coffee Shop @ Chinatown Point

Image
Hill Street Coffee Shop like Kiliney offers the kopi tiam experience at slightly higher prices but in air conditioned comfort. Rendang Chicken Nasi Lemak ($6.90) Fragrant basmati rice made this a hearty breakfast choice. Achar, belachan and ikan bilis are my staples when it comes to nasi lemak though I wish it came with an omelette too. Salted Egg Chicken Nasi Lemak ($8.90) Their newest creation and it had to be the salted egg sauce that got me, doused over a fried chicken cutlet and served over a blue pea rice. It was legitly delicious though gimmicky. I say stick with the normal nasi lemak for the real deal. Minced Pork Noodle Set ($6.50) It is not easy pulling of bak chor mee, especially when the Michelin starred version set the bar for me. Their version was really delicious though missing out on the vinegar but nobody is really complaining - a good alternative without the queues and perhaps a fraction of the satisfaction. Hill Street Coffee Shop surprised me with the quality of foo...

Village Park Restaurant @ Damansara Utama, Kuala Lumpur

Image
Having tried nasi lemak that dignitaries patronize in Johor, here comes Village Park that has won the hearts and stomachs of KL-ians. I was definitely not expecting a turn out like this but it seems like norm. There is both a takeaway and table queue. Servers clad in their signature orange shirts come around to take orders - assuming your hands are fastest enough to catch them in between clearing tables and delivering orders. Prices for reference. Nasi Lemak Set (RM 10.40) A staple at every table, it's almost cardinal sin visiting Village Park and ordering anything else. Portions are good enough for two truth be told. Juicy, absolutely tender and the generous coating of ginger and lemongrass was sufficient to sent me straight to chicken heaven. The batter was so crisp, I could just eat keropok out of these! Oh man. Best of 2017, this has to be. Nothing fancy, except down to earth solid good stuff. Bergedil (RM 1.80) that was rather ordinary but well with such an outstanding nasi ...

Warung Saga @ Jalan Mahamoodiah, Johor

Image
I love a good nasi lemak and had it not been for dining under the cherry tree , I may not have understood what I should be benchmarking against. Tracking down Warung Saga is no walk in the park, infact we had to drive very slowly so we would not miss this standalone shop. Warung Saga is so famous, even the guide books and their heritage trail has given them a spot! A must visit so say the locals, their royal dignitaries and anyone who loves classic Malay dishes. Ordering is done at the counter and food gets served almost immediately. Nasi Lemak arrived in a lack lustre fashion, rice with sliced ginger, half a boiled egg, ikan bilis and a dollop of belachan. Based on looks, we are definitely not talking about a life changing dish here. And magic happens. The inclusion of ginger in rice is ingenious to say the least, from the fragrance to the mild warmth in every spoonful to the sweet belachan, we are definitely talking about the best of its kind. No fuss, no frills, just simple and g...

The Coconut Club @ Ann Siang Hill

Image
The Coconut Club and their famed nasi lemak is the reason for the insane lunch crowds - you read right. No tables are served till everyone in line is present and in a single lunch period of 2 hours, tables are turned at least 3 times. And you get the drift how obsessed we are with nasi lemak, more so served in a cushier environment as compared to the heat and rowdy hawker centers. I have heard so much and I was looking forward to a life-changing plate of nasi lemak. Menu is straight forward, nasi lemak, pairing dishes as well as dessert. Ayam Goreng Berempah ($12.80) Coconut Rice, Chicken Leg, Ikan Bilis, Peanuts, Cucumber, Fried Egg, Sambal Granted every single diner had this and I was taken aback by the fragrance. I mean okayyy, nasi lemak usually smells amazing because of the coconut milk and coconut leaves combined (power combo alright). I was extra cautious approaching my plate - maybe the price tag or the expectations but let's just re-align. Cucumber slices and Fried ikan bi...

Poison Ivy Bistro @ Neo Tiew Road

Image
Never in my wildest dreams would I have traipsed half an island to Kranji Countryside for a morning of...going back to nature. I mean technically, it is already modernized and less rustic than they started out to be. And the wonders of motherhood sometimes, so thank god for an airconditioned respite after sweating out with the goats and plants. Tours for the adventurous. Part of Bollywood Veggies is Poison Ivy Bistro, very  aptly christianed after their founder Miss Ivy Singh and I was stoked to try their local delights. I was very bummed when I only spotted the weekend specials after placing my order - Ah, mee soto with bergedil, please wait for me! A very spacious cashier area with home made treats to purchase as well! Warrior's Platter ($20 for 2) Tempura, Bolly Wings, Dahl, Warrior's Chicken Curry, Warrior's Fish, Mixed Vegetables This is one of three sharing platters and had more protein than the Nasi Lemak or Vegetarian (for obvious reasons). All thin...

Cafe Storia @ Johor Bahru

Image
I got this confused with Shiduoli Otah (Don't ask me how) and we landed ourselves at Café Storia, coincidentally selling otah, bee hoon and nasi lemak. Otah is grilled on the spot and looked larger than Shiduoli's and I secretly rejoiced. At 90 sen each, price point wise this seemed more value for money but flunk at the point of taste. Amateur and almost ridiculous to be called otah, it was hardly tasty nor fragrant. Sigh. Asian breakfast gone kopitiam style. The beehoon goreng was really tasty, noodles with the right bite and sufficient amount of spice! My RM 2.90 packet nasi lemak certainly fared better with belachan, ikanbilis and firm coconut milk laced rice grains. Kampung spirit is getting the neighbouring café to deliver prata! The pratas were so good! Especially the fish gravy that made our breakfast so satisfying. Café Storia 79-84, Jalan Storey, Kim Teng Park, 80300 Johor Bahru
