Saigon Boy Express @ Icon Village

Image
Within CBD, there are probably as many pho shops as there are salad shops. I'm not sure what correlation there is but I am not complaining. Saigon Boy promises Australian Vietnamese food from the heart, so those seeking the authentic Vietnamese experience will be shown the pho but that said, I already liked the forthrightness of this new kid on the block. Barely a month old and it is packed during lunch hours, I look forward to more meals. Lemongrass Pork and Prawn Rice Paper Rolls ($5) Rice vermicelli cleverly draped over prawns and lemongrass pork and secured with nori, Spicy Pulled Pork Burrito with Sriracha and Sour Cream ($5) The same spicy pulled pork as featured in the bahn mi, turns out the burrito was a better fit with it.   Fried Spring Rolls ($5) Bamboo Chicken Spring Rolls with Plum and Mint Dipper The dough was a tad too thick and minced chicken almost lost in the dough but the  plum and mint was a refreshing surprise at the bottom of the jar. The Beef Eater ($9) Be...

Wrap and Roll @ Changi City Point

Image
I have had my fair share of dining in Vietnam and a number of Vietnamese joints here too but Wrap and Roll had been under the radar for a while, especially when it comes from a chain, I was exceptionally wary. The curse of food chains maybe? Changi City Point is a ghost town of its own and perhaps a saving grace for the business park staff. For a friday night and a huge expo event going on and it was barely filled I held with bated breath how dinner would end up. Table condiments of local sambal and imported yellow chillies caught my eye. Spicier than chilli padi and so shiok when it burns! No wonder this canister was emptied at most tables. Ours included by the end of the meal. Iced Coffee ($5.30) Intense and the best of vietnam consumed, in a strange manner. Of all places here actually. Crispy Prawn Pancakes ($3.90, 2 pieces) I liked this least of the appetizers, the oily pancake was a tad too thick and the prawn cake was really just fish cake.  Taste of Hanoi Appetizer Platter ...

Sen Wine and Bistro @ Geylang

Image
Geylang always strikes me as a haven for exotic hawker food, the likes of crab beehoon, frog leg porridge, midnight dimsum are all found there. And there is Sen Wine and Bistro located in one of the lanes, behind these wooden doors. Sticks out quite like an atas sore thumb already, if you ask me. Vietnamese food, it seems they serve and that has even gotten them a spot on Tripadvisor. The bar that all of us were not interested in, perhaps the later crowds? 8pm dinners always gets us seats anywhere and in our case, it was our table and another's with just one waiter taking orders, serving food and also handling the cashier. Talk about multi tasking. This set up was more pomp and fuss than substance though. Vietnamese Coffee on the acidic side. Bowls of delicious. Grilled Pork Rice Vermicelli ($12.90) This comes with a side of vinegar as a dipping sauce. Picking this as a mains meant I get to enjoy sides with my dish! Kills two birds with one stone. The fried spring rolls were exce...

Yummy Viet @ Smith Street

Image
Yummy Viet stands out in a row of most local and chinese restaurants and located just next to a backpacker's hostel, it is no wonder that a number of foreigners were spotted dining rather than locals. Yummy or not, I shall decide after the meal. These lamp shades reminded me of the traditional vietnamese hats. Deep Fried Chicken and Rice ($7.90) Apart from the two-toned rice, there was nothing Vietnamese about it - and I could be wrong since my knowledge has been limited to broken rice, pho and bahn mi. BBQ Pork Noodle Dry ($7.90) BBQ Marinated Pork, Fried Spring Roll, Lettuce, Raw Bean Sprouts, Basil Leaf, Coriander, Shallot, Peanut, Spring Onion and Rice Noodle, Sweet and Sour Sauce Now we were finally talking Vietnamese with the colours captured in a single bowl. I was thankful they served the sweet and sour sauce separately. Tuck in by tossing in the ingredients and drizzling generously with sauce, I particularly enjoyed their well seasoned BBQ pork and spring rolls. Lots of f...
