Kam's Roast Revisited @ Pacific Plaza

Image
~Invited Session~ Kam's Roast has launched Singapore's version of 8 Treasure Rice, a staple at most roast meat shops in Hong Kong, with 4 Treasure Rice which has the brand's signature dishes all on a single plate! Think Roast Duck, Soya Chicken, BBQ Pork and salted egg. Priced at just $11.80+ for takeaway, this is a complete meal with soup of the day thrown in as well .  Together with their new launch is also a range of marinated meats that are wildly popular in Hong Kong as well and go well with their existing roast meat range.  Marinated Duck ($20) Marinated Tofu ($4.80) Marinated Egg ($1.80) Marinated Duck's Gizzard ($8.80) Marinated Chinese Mushrooms ($5.80) If their new menu does not appeal, just stick with their classics like Toro Char Siew and famous Roast Duck. This marinated cucumber with vinegar and garlic ($6.80) was still as good, crunchy chilled goodness! Kam's Roast Pacific Plaza

长顺 Chang Shun (Charcoal) Hong Kong Style Roasted @ Neil Road

Image
长顺 Chang Shun (Charcoal) Hong Kong Style Roasted is a crowd puller over lunch time at Neil Road. Queues can snake way over to the KTV next door but thankfully they move equally fast. Char Siew Roast Pork Rice Done the local way with sweet sauce drizzled and served with sliced cucumber and steaming hot rice. The roast pork is a deal sealer for me, crispy, fatty and meaty in that order, except the portion could be bigger. Is it me or roast meat portions are always never enough? Rice is always far more than the meat and I'm left wondering if I should top up for more meat. A side of sour vegetable duck soup comes with every order, be lucky and you'd fine a meaty duck carcass afloat in someone's bowl. Char Siew Wanton Noodles  The noodles are the bomb, literally. Springy throughout the meal, almost never losing any bite which is awesome possom for someone who is on the anti soggy noodle fan group. Three plump wantons were sufficient to win my vote for yummy. I threw in an extra ...

Kam's Roast @ Pacific Plaza

Image
~Invited Session~ By now, it is no secret that two timed Michelin starred Kam's Roast has swam its way up our shores and invaded Pacific Plaza with their award winning roast dishes. The appetizers of chilled cucumber and black fungus were actually tasty and mildly spicy too.  Suckling Pig   Roast Pork Teething problems may have got in the way of serving up a piping hot platter but that said, both still retained that crunch when teeth was sunk into the skins. Roast Duck While the famous goose is nowhere to be found, the management has promised discussions with NEA are underway and in the near future, fans need not flap all the way to Hong Kong for the legendary. Well, one can only hope and keep calm right? The roasted cousin, the duck was perfected after rounds of blind taste tests and even their regulars could not tell them apart, it seems. I would beg to differ on this, however.  Though same, but there are differences somewhat. The chef certainly nailed that signature crisp...

Golden Peony Revisited @ Conrad Singapore

Image
With no plans to visit Hong Kong anytime soon, heading to dimsum joints to silence those cravings seem to be the only resolution.  Golden Peony at Conrad Singapore offers cantonese cuisine featuring only choice Cantonese ingredients specially imported from diverse regions of China. A somewhat different platter of appetizers, sugared peanuts!   Steamed prawn dumplings with parsley ($8) The skin tore upon lifting from the steamer, a bad start in my opinion. The dimsum skin is supposed to withstand any stress or pressure of being lifted from the steamer at least.  A case of being undercooked or lack of skill, clearly.  Bland fillings followed suit. Steamed chicken dumpling (siew mai) with asparagus and black truffle ($8) Sold on black truffle, these chicken siew mais were half as satisfying as their pork fiends. Probably the consistency of meat made it so but I thought this was another high on hype.  Steamed barbecued pork bun ($6.40) The pau consistency was one of Ma Kuo Kueh (think colo...

Peach Garden @ Miramar Hotel

50% off dimsum from Mondays to Saturdays over lunch was the main draw for this visit and before I go on and praise it to the moon and stars, what was supposed to be a value for money offer ended up being a ridiculously expensive affair for us. There was no mention of a CNY markup for all items, which we only knew at point of payment. Visit made on 23rd January, supposedly within their "CNY period". Dimsum items were clearly marked up Turns out the dimsum sheet was reduced to that mere 20 items, half fried and steamed missing out on obvious staples like rice rolls, glutinous rice and even porridge. Even at 50% off each item was hovering at $6 a steamer. CNY Surcharge on ala carte menu Now this was most frustrating. The menu itself had no mention of sizing for their mains, there was just one price listed and neither did the captain say anything about the surcharge or catering a larger portion than publicized portion. We ended up with a Seafood Eefu Noodle for $84 , 10 of us ...
