Tempura Ten Ten @ Raffles City

Image
Tempura Ten Ten joins the stable of tendon restaurants available but their unique selling proposition is, they sell more than just tendon, infact, unagi don and even ramen. Talk about diversification. Special Tendon ($13.80) There are a number of customizations, original, spicy or type of rice. I was honestly tempted by truffle rice with a top up of a dollar but the companion mused "truffle oil". I love how this tendon does not sport the same ingredients as the rest - it does get boring when all restaurants offer exactly the same dish without any differentiation. Two prawns, pumpkin, meatball with cheese, long bean, mushroom, seaweed on a bed of rice made a decently filling meal for me. This probably suits ladies better and it comes with a side of cabbage and chilli padi as well as miso soup. The batter is light yet it still ended up soggy less than mid-way and no complaints since the spicy sauce was tantalizing enough to ignore that. Tempura Ten Ten is a decent tendon place ...

Don Meijin @ Bugis+

Don Meijin's another option for tendon lovers - and I found out through random scrolling of instagram. Located within Ramen Champion, I love how freestyle this is - one can order from any stall and the options are plenty though still heavier on ramen. Salted Egg Tendon ($16) This looks almost like the plastic food sets when it arrived - it could be the glistening salted egg yolk sauce or the scattering of curry leaves. This is certainly for the food fad fan and particularly it was just sauce without any trace of salted egg grits but I am not complaining when it was so tasty. The portions of the ingredients are manageable as opposed to Kohaku's massive. With 2 prawns, 1 fish, 1 chicken, crabstick, capsicum, longbeans, onsen egg and pumpkin, I was really full. Other special edition flavours include sakura and chilli crab. Original Tendon ($13.80) If fancy flavours are not your thing, there is always the original to satisfy tendon cravings. Mille Feuille Katsu Don ($12.80) With ...

Tendon Kohaku 天丼琥珀 Revisited @ Suntec City

Kohaku always comes to mind when I am nursing a tendon craving but...the queues put me off. To think of the three times I've attempted Kohaku at two locations, I had to take leave twice. Queues are not as hardcore as they used to be and it took us under 15 minutes to get a table and orders logged in. Complimentary yuzu pickles to munch on as my order gets prepped. One of my major pet peeves is...having lunch when I'm so hungry and the more I munch on these appetizers, the hungrier I get. Finally, my bowls are ready and I'm ready to tuck in! But first, the camera eats. The newest addition on the menu, this seafood bowl ($23.90) is such a delicious representative of #foodporn, ikura roe cascading down seaweed batter coated seafood pieces and visually, this got me sold. Oyster, scallop, prawns, king crab meat, mushrooms and more filled this bowl of heaven. The seaweed batter was absolutely fragrant and before long, I reached the brim of food coma. Move over crab sticks...

Kohaku @ Suntec City

Mention Tendon and both Kohaku and Ginza Itsuki Tendon come to mind - I am pretty sure there are tendons in tempura shops but those have not been able to win the hearts, minds and stomachs of diners the way these two brands have been able to. The most mind boggling situation with both is the never ending queues throughout the day. Lunch is a test of sheer persistence, perseverance and a definitely a mental game. I've tried Kohaku at Circular Road and queueing outside their shop was a sweat inducing affair, not to mention patience testing. Suntec's outlet is marginally bigger and waiting outside is a more pleasant affair, at least. I'd suggest going in twos or lesser if time is against you, having big groups means an endless wait in my opinion. Counter seats with full view of their open kitchen. These pickled yuzu radishes are delicious, an almost underwhelming looking appetizer but they were so good! Eat them with the tempura and it helps when things get a tad too heavy f...
