Jang Won Korean Restaurant @ Stulang Laut, Johor

Image
Since Bornga, I have been lusting for yet another JB trip to check out the korean food scene in Malaysia. Jang Won is a chain of Korean BBQ restaurants that specialises in grill and korean dishes. We chose the outlet nearest to the Causeway to avoid unnecessary jams on the way out. Indoor or outdoor, take your pick! First up, their impressive range of 13 side dishes were served up. I never had so many sides in a single seating before! Even if not every item was a favourite, the variety made us happy. The set for 4 comprises of the following courses at  RM 135 and served with free flow lettuce leaves and garlic; Grilled Pork Belly Of the three meats, this was the best in my opinion. Just grilled pork belly with a scattering of salt. Spare Ribs Chicken Bulgogi Both the chicken and beef were on the sweet side because of the marinade so unless you are a fan of sweet sauced meats, stick with the pork belly and an ala carte order. The best part of the BBQ is the server goes round to...

Bornga @ City Square, Johor

Image
Had it not been for the exchange rate, I am usually not compelled to go beyond the comfort zones of Chinese and Malay food in Malaysia. Afterall, French and Italian have been rather disappointing previously. Bornga in Singapore however was on the to-try list for awhile now but the queues and prices usually puts me off - Tanjong Pagar seems to offer more than enough options than the mallls I must say. It was an off peak hour of almost 3pm, no queues and we got a table rather quickly. I wish we had time for BBQ but I suppose saves us for another visit. Noob me isn't even aware that they have so many outlets outside of Korea! 7 side dishes for top  ups as and when the appetite calls for it! My favourites include these sesame oil tossed beansprouts. A rice jelly served with a mildly spicy sauce. Kimchi that deserves so many repeats! Not many serve up kimchi with the right fermentation and this was acidic and appetizing all at once. Delicious. Seafood Pancake (RM 38) The fluffiest kore...

Bigmama Korean Restaurant @ Kim Tian Road

Image
Bigmama at Kim Tian finally fell under our radar - a case of lazy to search high and low for dinner. I mean after so many years at its current location and another outlet under their name, they had to be something decent. The moment I step foot, I already smelled of barbeque. There was no hiding from leaving the restaurant without reeking of food. Freeflow Banchan This freeflow service is typically what makes eating Korean worth the while - but they can also factor the cost into the ala carte dishes and we pay anyway! Twice was all we managed and my favourites include lotus root salad, anchovies, spinach and glass noodles. Dakgalbi ($18 per pax, min 2 to dine) Panfried chicken with vegetables, rice cake, sweet potato and spicy sauce The waitress does the cooking and it felt like a private chef at some point. A one pan dish of chicken, cabbage, carrots, rice cakes and sweet potato. It definitely did not taste like $36 worth of ingredients though it filled us two to the brim - I susp...
