Rookery @ Capital Tower

Image
Rookery, owned by Daniel Ong, is yet another brunch-lunch-early drinks hangout along CBD that probably gets more diners and drinkers at sun down than lunch. I suppose that's how they were branded the coffee, kitchen and bar place? At least for their outlet that Capital Tower, lunch was a rather leisurely affair  without any of the annoying crowds. Or perhaps, it was just Monday. Pulled Pork Egg Benedict ($16) Pulled Pork, BBQ Sauce, Ratatouille, Sweet Peas, Streaky Bacon, Hollandaise, Grilled Broiche, Poached Eggs Sure this looked 100% delicious, colours were all on point and on picture looked absolutely tasty. Well for a start, this was brunch at lunch so I obviously missed the weekend too much and had to have an overdose of brunch on a weekday even. Brioche was a tad too soft that it started collapsing under the weight of those poached eggs, avocado, ratatouille and pulled pork even. And bacon too. If anything, this was just a soggy sandwich. Pulled Pork Wrap ($18) 12 hour slo...

Buttergrill @ Tanjong Pagar Road

Image
Butter is the sole reason behind Buttergrill. Who'd have thought that their assortment of handcrafted flavored butters are created from special recipes which include Spicy Salted Egg Yolk, Lemon Chilli, Orange Ginger, Spicy Miso, Classic Red, Spicy Laksa, Truffle, Foie Gras, Red Wine and Figs, Mustard and Classic White. In short, wow. Truffle Mushroom Cheese Fries ($12) Straight Cut Fries served with Sauteed Wild Mushrooms and Truffle Butter, Topped with Melted Cheese The oil smell was too strong and fries overcooked with oil dripping. A letdown already though visually tantalizing with that drippy cheese but well, I was deceived. Chicken Lolli ($14) Deep Fried Chicken Drumlets Tossed with Sauteed Onions, Capsicum and Lemon Chili Butter Once again, the frozen chicken smell was very obvious even with the batter, deep frying and lemon chili butter. Duck Breast ($16) Grilled Duck Breast Served with Sambal Butter Finally, a tapas course that deserves some serious mention. I'm not...

CBD Trail: Wraps

Image
Wraps are the new salads, or not. Most sandwich shops have an option of wraps, likewise salad shops too. It works great for folks who want their sandwich and eat it - without the apparent carbs (fluffy bread versus flat wrap). Dimbulah Coffee 72  Anson Road Nothing fancy, this smoked salmon wrap is by no means spectacular as compared to the other players. A by-the-way kind of order to go with an order of coffee. Salad Stop! Capital Tower Tuna San ($12.50) Romaine, seared tuna, avocado, edamame, cherry tomatoes, mandarin orange, sesame seeds, Wasabi Honey Soy dressing Admittedly, I was drawn to the name of this wrap. Seared tuna sounded good, so did edamame and wasabi honey soy dressing. I watched my fat wrap being toasted, halved and served.  One half started dripping on the napkin that I used to wrap and eat with. Not a good start. There is a choice of wrap: Wholemeal, original, tomato and spinach. I adventurously went for spinach that looked green, and that was the part of spinach...

Roll Up @ Circular Road

Image
~Invited Session~ Roll Up, an Kebab concept influenced by Indian flavours is the brainchild of two entrepreneurial consultants who have spent a reasonable amount of time traipsing around the world and eating out. Located at Circular Road, it is a hot spot during lunch hours and afterwhich, happy hours just got happier with their bottle deals. Pistol and Mortar ($11) Chicken Tikka, Indian Spices Mughal Mouton ($13) Mutton Seekh Kebab, Mughlai and In-house Spices Fish-Ti-Cuffs ($11) Yogurt based flavours They take pride in marinating their meats a full day ahead and freshly grill them on the spot. The guys scoff at the traditional kebabs with a wheel of meat and the same slab used for hours till it runs out. The spiciness have been tweaked to suit the tastebuds of the working crowd in Raffles Place and for me, they barely caused a ripple on the tongue. I opted to have my Fish-Ti-Cuffs upped in spice levels and finally, that showed me what spice and fire is. Loved it! Masala Fries ...
