Yun Nans @ Jewel Changi Airport
~Invited Session~
Hailing from China, this restaurant specialises in highland cuisine with dishes cooked using ingredients found in the seven tropical belts in Yunnan. The first outside China, the Husband was curious to see how this matched up to the one he tried in Shanghai!
The table of ingredients used in their dishes.
Do you spot any that you're familiar with? The number of herbs and pastes used is a mind boggling array.
Raspberry Juice with Tamarind
I'd have guessed this were hawthorn than raspberry juice.
Tossed Rice Noodles with Shredded Chicken ($12.90)
I love the colours of this dish, vibrant and would qualify as a noodle salad too. Best consumed tossed for the medley of flavours to shine.
One delicious mess.
Yunnan Rice Noodles in Prawn Broth and Black Truffle ($13.90)
Exclusively available in Singapore, this soupy one is bound to delight with a rich broth and mild spiciness that lingers.
Steamed Pot Chicken Soup ($23.90)
Using only a special breed of black feet chickens, the soup is brewed using a unique technique that does not require a single drop of water and uses steam and condensation to create a heady chicken broth best eaten with a plate of cold rice noodles, chicken, vegetables and egg tossed in a vinegary sauce.
Chicken from the same dish tossed in the chilli sauce it comes with - I love such dishes actually, with more than one way of consuming.
Beef stew in copper pot ($24.90)
If you're up for a spicy challenge, this is a must order with an intense beef broth filled with beef shin, tendon and offal peppered with a generous amount of chilli.
Not to mention it comes with a side of salted vegetables too.
Stir-fried Wild Porcini and Dried Chillies ($24.90)
Who'd think mushrooms as a main dish would taste so good? These wild mushrooms are really tasty and can pass off as a meat dish even!
Spicy and Sour Egg Salad ($9.90)
Who'd have thought fried eggs could be given a new lease of life with spice and some tang? This reminded me of a thai dish more than chinese actually but nobody is complaining when it's so appetizing.
Grilled Seabass with Lemongrass ($22.90)
The seabass was butterflied before giving a good spicy rub a dub before grilling and what was presented was a tantalizing fish dish.
Beancurd Pudding with Rose ($4.90)
End off the meal on a sweet note, this rose pudding is a cross between soya bean curd and almond cream.
I am getting on Yun Nans bandwagon, the food is good and so are the prices. I have my favourites and have spread the word for friends to visit - so far they have given positive feedback too.
