The Ranch @ Aljunied

Image
Western food in Geylang? They've been around for close to a decade now and I guess they are doing things right. Ranch Grilled Chicken ($13.90) Ranch Pork Chop ($13.90) Beneath the blanket of sauce, both the pork chop and chicken chop tasted really similar. The chicken fared better in terms of char and flavor otherwise these are really average. Quesadilla ($13.90) I would have guessed this was made from unsold chicken chops and topped with melted cheese before being toasted. Turns out this was the best of the three we ordered. I'm not sure if this is worth a return, perhaps drinks are more their specialty in this part of Singapore. The Ranch 71 Lorong 27 Geylang

Blue Label Pizza @ Ann Siang Hill

Image
Word has it that the chef from Mozza Pizzeria has jumpshipped and opened Blue Label - hooray for me, a mega fan of Mozza's. They are the best our island has to offer, or at least I think that way and standards have been pretty consistent so I was super bummed knowing that Mozza would be closing. Blue Label State Fries ($25) Handcut Idaho Potatoes, Black Pepper Gravy, Fried Egg, Aioli, Shaved Truffle Won over by hand cut and shaved truffles but are these the best fries around? These salted snacks pack a pow wow with its crisp exterior and that egg porn with the mere prod. Pricey yet so satisfying, I'm torn between wanting that whiff of truffle oil to go with my fries stack and having a full meal out of these fries. Whichever the case, this heavyweight is not for the faint hearted. J Dog ($32) Pork Sausage, Bacon, Pepperoni, Jalapeño, Red sauce Guest Pizza ($35) This was a collaboration with Chef Vinny from The Guild Singapore with a Pig's Head Pepperoni, pickled chillis, pec

Simply Bread @ Cluny Court

Image
A recent visit to Cluny Court had me chancing upon Simply Bread, a hole in wall bakery and I was lured in by their aromatic bakes. So lured, I had these taken away for my tea time.   Buttery and flaky croissants lathered with a truffle cheese from The Cheese Shop and made complete with Kettle Chips Unsalted Chips. This had to be my favourite combination to date - don't you think cheese makes anything taste so good? And now for the olive granary sour dough loaf that I cannot give up - olives in bread are my weakness. Look at that beautiful crust! This was the densest of the three I tried but so fragrant. Perfect with butter. The raspberry jam and almond loaf too was just a soft loaf but I liked how the whole loaf came together, the jam was just enough for every bite to have some and icing sugar albeit so old school made this a delicious one. These breads cost between $3-4 each and are so worth it, can't wait to head back! Simply Bread 501 Bukit Timah Road #02-07

Mooi Chin Revisited @ Golden Landmark Hotel

Image
Mooi Chin is a hit amongst tourist groups, perhaps for its variety of cuisines and affordable pricing. We headed back and boy was it chaotic from 6-7pm with the dishes churned out like canteen food pace to feed hungry children and the waitresses were clearly functioning at their maximum and we had to wait even with a reservation for our table to be ready and food took another eons to be served since priority was given to the tour groups. Hainanese Pork Chop ($14) As much as this is not the island's best version I cannot help but order it every time we are there.Talk about inertia. Hainanese Mutton Soup ($16) For this single portion I thought we struck gold, it easily fed 5-6 and we had so much leftovers for 3 of us! Gamey mutton chunks but I am definitely not complaining since the meat was tender and the broth was so robust. Paired with bamboo shoot and also beancurd skins, this would have been a hearty meal on its own with just rice. Hainanese Poached Chicken ($20) Pricey the folk

FireBake Revisited @ East Coast Road

Image
I saw, came and enjoyed the best hidden breakfast secret in Katong - $4.50 Morning Set comprising of a sourdough milk bun, two boiled eggs to the choice of doneness (well just soft or hard) and a cup of housebrewed kopi or teh. This price tag had my kopitiam loving mother and father changing plans and I am not surprised. Even prices at Yakun and Toastbox would rival this and god, I hate the flimsy as nothing thing toasted bread. Crunchy toast is one of my nemesis and leaving breakfast feeling like I ate nothing is the a mighty pet peeve (as you can already sense). Clearly, I am bowled over by the value of the set and I even topped up a dollar for their housemade kaya. Maybe Chin Mee Chin could have pulled off a meaner kaya recipe but for that pillowy soft and chewy sour dough milk bun? I am definitely returning. I was also tempted by the Firebake Morning Bun ($3.50) that was really cinnamon roll in disguise and a chuck load more sin. Sinking my teeth into those crinkly layers had to b

Ginza Lion @ Suntec City

Image
Ginza Lion falls under the category of Japanese Beer Hall cum gastropub - multiconcepts if you ask me and I was there for lunch. Sandos are high on their lunch menu as with the roast beef and katsu items based on their menu. I guess you could have beer at lunch if you fancied? Hire and Rosu Katsu Set ($27) All their ramen and katsu sets comes with refillable cabbage, rice and miso - score for the hungry diners! I was definitely satisfied with my single serving. Chicken Katsu Set ($18) The chicken version was definitely more tender than the pork yet somehow I feel pork katsu is always a first choice for me. Oyster ($3.50) Out of gluttony, I had to have a side portion of this juicy one and no regrets because the best way to consume oysters next to having them raw is to katsu them and Ginza Lion does a really mean version of it. Their katsu sets come with freeflow rice, miso soup and cabbage which is a really good deal! I'd be back for more of the other dishes. Ginza Lion Suntec City

GoldLeaf Restaurant @ East Coast Road

Image
~Invited Session~ GoldLeaf, a household name in Taiwanese Porridge, has now launched an ala carte porridge buffet menu and also brought back long lost classics. The buffet will include 8 mainstays including Ah Ma's Tri Platter, Meicai Kourou, Kaohsiung Chilli Chicken, Chye Poh Omelette, Steamed Pork Patty with Salted Fish, Tainan Olive Taiwanese Lettuce, Double Beancurd Platter and Seafood Beancurd. The major selling point of GoldLeaf is no MSG is used in their dishes which makes them a huge advocate for healthy eating and diners can enjoy all their dishes without worrying! At the tasting I had a showcase of the buffet and also their classic dishes. Scroll below for the chow down! Teochew porridge is always so comforting - especially sweet potato and just rice! Kaohsiung Chilli Chicken reminds me of La Zi Ji but less spicy and saucier. So tasty! Ah Ma's Tri Platter ($10.80) Braising of the ingredients takes about 5-6 hours and what's featured in the platter include fried m

Pho Street Revisited @ Bedok Mall

Image
I randomly paid Pho Street at Bedok Mall a visit and I'd have to say I am surprised how many likeminded diners there are at 11ish am. Who else eats early lunches on weekends too? Chicken Pho ($8.90) Beef Pho ($8.90) Without a doubt between chicken and beef, I am a beef fan. Especially for pho, the latter has a more robust flavour. That said, those in Singapore are definitely more localized and this is miles away from the sugar sweet grassy raw authentic version. Mango Salad ($6.90) Crunchy mango salad with a sprinkling of seafood. Their version is a tad sour with the vinaigrette dressing but still refreshing. Snack Platter ($8.90) Probably microwaved and that's how I ended up with chewy thai fish cakes, lukewarm satays and overfried spring rolls. Vietnamese food here is very localised and probably not as authentic as Wrap and Roll even. A decent place for lunch to be settled, just not quite for taste. Pho Street B1-40, Bedok Mall
