The Beast Revisited @ Jalan Klapa
Jalan Klapa like CBD is mostly quiet on weekdays and I love the serenity of the place - mostly uninterrupted save for the random cyclist. We scored a table outside on the pavement since indoor is not condusive for a baby chair and second floor is closed on weekdays.
Buffalo Wings ($12)
I was expecting a volcanic reaction from these wings - nada. Lip tingling maybe but that was just it. I wish they remained crispy though.
Duck and Sausage Gumbo ($10)
The gumbo was more of a gravy with duck and sausage cubes and served with toasted bread. Hearty stuff!
Chicken and Waffles ($20)
Boneless Chicken Thigh, 24 Hour Brine, Crisp Waffle, House-made Bourbon Maple Bacon Sauce
Crispy waffles as promised served with a equally crispy fried chicken and a drizzle of bourbon maple bacon sauce. I am usually a sweet waffle fan but would switch sides for this.
Blackened Pork Collar ($24)
Broccoli, Roasted Yukon Potatoes with Bacon, Thyme and Garlic Cream Sauce
Highly recommended by the staff and I am glad we listened - the doneness of this charred beauty was great, not too tender not too tough and this just reaffirms why my favourite part of the pig next to the belly is the neck. Loved the seasoning too - oh garlic cream sauce, can you go wrong with it?
Country Fried Steak ($24)
Sirloin Steak, Fine Beans, Mashed Potatoes, Country Gravy
The single disappointment of the meal - rubbery overcooked steak and a batter that fell off too quickly. The mashed potatoes and gravy were however really delicious.
Snapper Jambalayan Pasta ($22)
Pan-seared Barramundi, Chicken, Andouille Sausage. Penne, Spicy Creole Sauce
There was plenty going on in a single plate, fish, chicken and even pasta! Made for someone with a hearty appetite and this could do with more heat.
Unleash the Beast indeed. My visit to The Beast have been pleasant and revisits are definitely on the agenda...if only they are a tad more baby friendly on weekdays.
