Tong Guan Kopitiam @ City Square

Image
I hide no shame in admitting I head over the Causeway for my egg sponge cake fixes - the queues are way shorter and they are priced way more wallet friendly. Granted there are other errands to run as well! The price lists - loud and clear, outstanding and visible. The queue system is well thought through and I prefer this over physically queuing. I even had time to see how they unveiled their freshly baked cakes from the oven! Hot, steaming and measured to precision. Spot the oozing cheese at the corners. At RM19 this was a steal, given our strong currency too. After a good 6 hours later, it looked pretty much intact! I've had the cake straight from the oven and hours later - still sold on that marshmellowy texture that makes eating clouds - a very possible idea. Original and cheese have both won our hearts, onto their chicken floss and chocolate flavours next!

Blue Lotus Mediterranean Kitchen + Bar @ Alexandra

Image
~Invited Tasting~ Blue Lotus Mediterranean Kitchen + Bar is the latest brainchild of Chef Helios Goncalves from Boca (we could've guessed from his signatures that seem all too familiar!). Unlike the other Blue Lotus outlets, this focuses more on Mediterranean cuisine. Retaining most if not all of Portico's furnishings. Of all their drinks, I actually think they do a mean soda. Octopus and Squid Carpaccio ($16) Octopus, Squid, Extra Virgin Olive Oil, Brunoises Peppers, Fresh Lemon Juice, Rocket Salad Exquisitely put together, I'd not have guessed the rings are squid and slices octopus. So tender, those who've assaulted either by overcooking should be put to shame. I thought this was an ingenious and refreshing dish apart from the usual beef. Venus Clams in a Pot ($18) Venus Clams, White Wine Sauce, Coriander, Lemon and Garlic Butter White wine clams never disappoints and is infact the easiest dish to replicate at home. Lemon garlic butter got me dunking my sour dough a

Tuck Shop Revisited @ Guillemard Road

Image
~Invited Session~ Tuck shop reminds me of a school canteen - ah the memories of being young and boring, once. So now going to the tuckshop brings about a different set of memories - no longer boring at least. This neighbourhood joint is hip, casual and friendly. Sundown is when it comes alive, quite literally. Platter by Locals ($26) Mid wings, Carrot Cake, Pork Chop Fingers, Gyoza Carrot cake got me hooked, instead of the usual char tow kuay, this is close to XO carrot cake with a crispy layer. Those wings, pork chop fingers and gyoza are perfect with beer! Now you know why I say it comes alive sundown? Even their food is catered for that purpose. Green Fingers ($10) Gratin Asparagus Cheese and asparagus actually tasted better than I thought - crunchy and cheesy! I'd have loved it to the moon and back if the cheese were molten. Cheese porn, alert. B eefilicious Noodles ($18) Ribeye, Black Pepper Sauce For some reason this reminded me of black pepper horfun, the flavours were

The Beast Revisited @ Jalan Klapa

Image
Jalan Klapa like CBD is mostly quiet on weekdays and I love the serenity of the place - mostly uninterrupted save for the random cyclist. We scored a table outside on the pavement since indoor is not condusive for a baby chair and second floor is closed on weekdays. Buffalo Wings ($12) I was expecting a volcanic reaction from these wings - nada. Lip tingling maybe but that was just it. I wish they remained crispy though. Duck and Sausage Gumbo ($10) The gumbo was more of a gravy with duck and sausage cubes and served with toasted bread. Hearty stuff! Chicken and Waffles ($20) Boneless Chicken Thigh, 24 Hour Brine, Crisp Waffle, House-made Bourbon Maple Bacon Sauce Crispy waffles as promised served with a equally crispy fried chicken and a drizzle of bourbon maple bacon sauce. I am usually a sweet waffle fan but would switch sides for this. Blackened Pork Collar ($24) Broccoli, Roasted Yukon Potatoes with Bacon, Thyme and Garlic Cream Sauce Highly recommended by the staff and I am glad

Warung Saga @ Jalan Mahamoodiah, Johor

Image
I love a good nasi lemak and had it not been for dining under the cherry tree , I may not have understood what I should be benchmarking against. Tracking down Warung Saga is no walk in the park, infact we had to drive very slowly so we would not miss this standalone shop. Warung Saga is so famous, even the guide books and their heritage trail has given them a spot! A must visit so say the locals, their royal dignitaries and anyone who loves classic Malay dishes. Ordering is done at the counter and food gets served almost immediately. Nasi Lemak arrived in a lack lustre fashion, rice with sliced ginger, half a boiled egg, ikan bilis and a dollop of belachan. Based on looks, we are definitely not talking about a life changing dish here. And magic happens. The inclusion of ginger in rice is ingenious to say the least, from the fragrance to the mild warmth in every spoonful to the sweet belachan, we are definitely talking about the best of its kind. No fuss, no frills, just simple and g
