Lucca's Trattoria @ Robertson Walk

Italian cuisine does not automatically rank tops for favoured cuisines and it was one of those - where shall we go? casual and cosy sort of decisions and Lucca's came up in the search.

With an open mind, we checked out this restaurant specializing in Tuscan cuisine. I've never been to Tuscany but Italy remains one of my favourite countries in the world for food.

Calamari ($14)
Crisp golden brown calamari rings sprinkled with Sea Salt and Freshly ground Black Pepper, served with Garlic Caper and Lime Aioli

Like tempura, calamari rings are a gauge of the kitchen's deep frying skills. Lightly coated, absolutely tasty, these rings were tender and thankfully not rubbery. The garlic caper and lime aioli are must tries too, I am hardly a calamari fan. Until this appetizer of course.

Caprese ($12)
Chunks of soft Buffalo Mozzarella tossed with mixed Cherry Tomatoes, torn Basil Leaves and dotted with sweet balsamic reduction

The chunk of Mozzarella made the dish sing and I loved every bite of this.

Margherita ($21)

Napolitan style pizza with a hand pulled base and a simple smattering of ingredients.

Polpo Capellini ($28)
Grilled octopus in squid-ink capellini

You know how squid ink pasta dishes are frowned upon as first date dishes? Well now, this is one dish that is a must order, first date or not.

Incredibly delicious with those al dente strands of pasta and a char grilled sliced octopus. I would get my teeth and lips stained over and over again.

Chicken Milanese ($25)
Breaded chicken escallops smothered in creamy black pepper, bacon and mushroom gravy, served with fries and rucola

The portions wowed us, two huge slabs of chicken escallops - breaded and fried. Bacon and mushroom gravy on its own was so good and better with fries.

It felt like a family run joint, very warm with unpretentious delicious food. I will be back and it's as simple as it is.
