Hyang Yeon Restaurant @ Amoy Street

Image
I was sold on their $13 set lunches which includes half portions of soup and hotplate meats. Queues are expected and unless reservations are made prior to 1230pm, expect a decent wait. From the choice of soup to hotplate meat to side dishes and kimchi, there are plenty of choices to be made. If fickle is your middle name I would highly suggest not going at all. Kimchi Stew, Grilled Chicken Spicy Tofu Stew, Grilled Beef Sides are not refillable and the dishes were considerably tasty though chicken was better than beef. Drinks are also included in the lunch set prices so that's a double win for me too! Reasonably priced lunch options and with the best of both worlds, I am a fan! Do look out for snooty service though, the servers are not at their happiest nor cheeriest at all times. Hyang Yeon #01-01, 80 Amoy St

Dolcetto by Basilico Cakes

Image
I love to have my cake and eat it, and honestly if I could have things my way I would eat cake everyday. One of the things I do when I check into any hotel is to check out the bakery and oogle at their cakes. Regent, is by far my favourite hotel for Food and Beverage, cakes included so everytime a special occasion comes by, I think of them. I'd eaten all the non-chocolate flavours over the last couple of months and here's a review of them! Onto the chocolate flavours next!    Carrot and Orange Cake ($38) Carrot Sponge cake. Carrot Cream is with citrus and Orange Juice I have had enough carrot cakes to do a double take on this carrot and orange cake. I love how this had none of the fondant (eeks!) or whipped cream or fanciful sugar adornments. Just the sponge cake with a heap of fruits. The best part about the cake is how carrot and orange are infused so beautifully that there is none of the raw carrot nor overbearing citrusy flavours showing through. Just a really moist carrot

T20 Cavan Restaurant and Bar @ Cavan Road

Image
The.twenty.cavan also known as T20 joins the enclave of cafes that dot Jalan Besar with a fusion concept. Think Western and Asian flavours presented in a rustic style bistro with an open concept kitchen. T20 Cavan at 20 Cavan Road cannot get more in your face. Touches like these literally light up the cafe. With a flicker of a button, it transformed into a light lamp. Industrial chic ruleths the design of the bistro. Right by the counter where drinks come alive, I spotted this corner that doubles up as a snack corner. It's a walk down memory lane with bits and bobs from yesteryears - gem cookies, curry crackers and even peas! My little bowl of yesterday. These aren't part of my childhood but I just couldn't help but reach for these wrapper sweets. Mushroom Skewers ($8) Rather than just fried mushrooms on a skewer, these were more like vegetable skewers with a medley of peppers, onions and mushrooms. The sauce in particular resembled tauhu telor's peanut sauce and was r

Strong Flour @ Katong V

Image
The ladies behind my favourite cafe has opened a new joint at Katong V - almost dominating the scene with G roup Therapy , Scoop Therapy and now Strong Flour all within walking distance from each other. Talk about some serious ambition here. Snug right at the back of Katong V, area is spacious and there's lots of natural light brightening up the place a whole lot.  Handmade fresh daily with just strong flour, water, eggs and salt, these promise no chemicals nor preservatives. Fancy anything italian? You name it, they probably have it. These matte gold cutlery is love, so sleek! #tablewaregoals Calamari ($12) Crumb crusted tender squid rings which came with an equally delicious dip. Carbonara ($16) Pappardelle, pancetta, egg yolks, spinach Their carbonara is truly classic without any use of cream, just egg yolks, cheese and seasoning with their handmade pasta noodles. One bite and I was already sold. That's the magic with handmade fresh pasta, the imperfections are what makes i

Honestbee Delivery: Empress Place Beef Noodle

Image
Food deliveries are my lifesavers on rainy days, lazy days and any other day I feel I deserve a break and food sent to my doorstep would just make it a whole lot better. With the stiff competition these days, vendors like Honestbee have also branched into food delivery for the share of the fat pie. Empress Place Beef Noodle was the only option next to JK Don for Asian and we were all keen to see how soup would survive a delivery, arrive piping hot and still be as comforting as if I were to dine in at the coffee shop. To be fair, I've only known Hock Lam Beef Noodle as THE beef noodle. Beef Char Kuay Teow ($7.80) I see no difference between fried beef kuay teow and this though it was clearly already missing out on wok hei and my food was served hardly piping hot and kuay teow was already soggy. Beef Kuay Teow Dry ($9.80) We were all wondering if dry beef kuay teow meant laksa noodles with a starchy sauce over it but it turned out similar to their beef kuay teow soup with alot les

Two Men Bagel House Revisited @ Icon Village

Image
Two years ago, I was won over by bagels. Two years later, the same guys proved it was not by hat trick that their bagels are stunning. Freshly made in house daily, the lunch crowds speak for themselves when we are talking about a full population of salad chugging and laksa slurping office crowd. And, the queues are always snaking, tables are full too. Piglet ($8.50) Montreal bacon served with deep fried potato patties, lemon garlic aioli, runny eggs and greens The ultimate power breakfast combo with hash browns, eggs and bacon paired with my choice of garlic bagel. This all day brunch item would give the mcmuffin a huge run for their money - though one portion of this gets me 4 mcmuffins. Dense bagel with a delicious bite, it is a no brainer how satisfying this all american breakfast combination is almost fool proof spot on. HogV2 ($13.90) Bbq pork ribs served with pickled purple and granny smith slaw and raw yellow onions    Pulled pork and slaw on a caramelized onion bagel which wa

Guenpin Fugu @ Maxwell Chambers

Image
~Invited Session~ I consider eating fugu as one of those items on my bucket list to check off and despite having been to Osaka, my guts failed me in the face of Fugu. What the...fugu, really. Guenpin Fugu hails from Japan and they are the largest fugu restaurant chain there. Singapore is their first overseas stop and the 32 seater serves torafugu and snow crabs in their ala carte and full course menu. Torafugu is a premium grade fugu and there are a few styles that this delicacy can be enjoyed - tessa (thin) or butsusashi (thick slices), karaage, sushi, grilled, hotpot and also have it served in congee. Zeitaku Course ($168/head) feeds 2 comfortably and menus start from $88. Tsukidashi Parboiled Puffer Fish Skin Sashimi Tasteless on its own, this crunchy delight is best consumed with their grated radish, spring onions nad soy sauce.   Thick Sliced Puffer Fish Sashimi Between the tessa and butsusashi, I prefer the latter somehow. Chewing on the thick slice snug in a lettuce leaf an
