Ah Yat Kitchen @ Capitol Piazza

Ah Yat Kitchen at Capitol Piazza's Food Republic outlet stands out for being the casual arm of their chain of seafood restaurants. Offering affordable fare, I was piqued to find out how banquet fare would be like in a food court setting.

For starters, we had table service instead of self service which was a major plus point despite the food court prices of their dishes. Plus, the dishes were nicely plated just like in their restaurant.

Roasted BBQ Combination

Average roasts with soggy skinned pork belly slices and fatty char siew.

Lobster Claw Meat and Minced Seafood Soup

Reasonably tasty starchy soup with lobster claw meat even.

Stewed Whole 6 PPC Fresh Abalone with Mushrooms and Vegetables

This was beginning to look alot like a chinese new year set menu with baby abalone, mushroom and greens. My only grouse is - why so few stalks of greens?

Deep Fried Fish Fillet in Thai Sauce

Crispy fish fritter topped with a spicy and sweet sauce, this was my favourite.

Baked Salted Half Chicken

Probably over rubbed with salt, this salted baked chicken would go well with rice.

Oddly better than their restaurant itself though on the saucier side.

Bird's Nest with Almond Cream

We were pleasantly surprised to find bird's nest on the menu, and they honoured their promise with a spoonful of bird's nest in each bowl of piping how almond cream. I'm a huge fan of almond cream so this was a hit for me.

This was a pleasant surprise for me, given how their restaurants have dished up pretty average fare. Yet it begs the question, will you spend almost $150 for 6 at a food court with the extra service?

Baba Steven or Chef Steven is endearingly known as has been whipping up peranakan feasts from his Bukit Batok Home since he retired. We booked a table of 8 for a $450 dinner comprising of 8 dishes. ~Invited Session~ Move over set menus, we now have individual set menus with dishes individually plated and these come at a pocket friendly $38++ onwards. Taste Paradise and Paradise Teochew are the two restaurants under Paradise Group with these newly launched menus. The featured menu goes for a tune of $38++, there is an option for wine pairing at a top up of $38++ as well. Teochew Style Braised Duo Combination Braised sliced Irish Far Duck, Braised Egg A teaser of their teochew classic served, tender braised duck, crispy beancurd and a delicious drizzle of gravy. Kapuka Marlbourough Sauvignon Blanc 2017 New Zealand A fresh, fruity and crisp wine. Dry with high acidity though. Ole Ole Kueh @ Parkway Parade

Food kiosks always excite me and more so when they pedal peranakan kuehs. So this was the story behind Ole Ole Kueh - perfectly distracting when waiting for transport at Parkway Parade methinks. Having been won over by Milk Moon's Pulut Serunding, any chance at these deconstructed lempur udangs, I leap at it. This version was draped in coconut, chicken floss and shrimp and the glutinous rice balls were just oddly half as satisfying. Probably the savoury part was not nailed well. Kueh Cara is a dense pandan nonya treat, uncommon actually though it was probably made from the same mould as the kueh bahilu. Kueh kosui at Ole Ole's is as per their other kuehs, really dense. I prefer them lighter actually. Moving onto the savoury snacks, epok epok is a must every time I spy it - just like curry puffs.
