Joy's @ Uptown Sweets @ Owen Road

Image
I have not met anyone who can resist a macaron  - coloured so pretty and sugary sweet, any bad day is turned good with a nibble. These are my weakness infact, a huge one. Paris made me a total convert, throwing me into the deep ends of sugar-die-me with so many brands retailing these sweet nibblets. Thankfully, in Singapore we do not have such to-die-for options if not I have every reason to worry about the already expanding waistline. Joy's at Owen Road is almost hidden in the neighbouring blocks but those who know, know. Orders for her highly sought after macarons are taken online - on her fan page in particular with flavours made known regularly and fans lap them up by the boxes. Mid-Autumn gave me a chance to check these babies out - I promptly ordered a box of 10 with 4 flavours and they came so beautifully made - happy feet and all. The filling was chunky monkey kind of glorious, I wrinkle my nose at stingy bakers - who eats macarons with mostly sugar shells and measly fillin

Sum Kee Food @ Telok Blangah Street

Image
I am always on the look out for zichar places to add to my comfort list, partly because too much restaurant food can kill the appetite. #firstworldproblems Next to Por Kee, I have yet to find another that I can count on regardless of day and time of the week. Sum Kee Food fell under the radar after a particular instagram post by a fellow foodie - How I love social media for its no secrets policy - I mean good food is for sharing. Located in a building that also has a clinic, ask around and be directed to the large restaurant.  Ultra Man Chicken ($10) With the salted egg craze going strong recently, this salted egg fried chicken topped the list for sin. Doused in a savoury salted egg sauce these bite sized fried chicken pieces were a tough contender for addictive beer snacks. Hot Plate Tofu ($10) Sizzling hot dish of tofu and egg, worth the theatrics I say! Yam Ring ($18) Another old school dish that I started eating since a kid and we all marvel at the beauty of the yam ring. This w

Tavern Revisited @ The Tanglin Club

Image
Bar counters always intrigue me, especially when they belong to establishments with history under its belt. The Tanglin Club, was one of the pillars of social life in Singapore for successful members of the European community and still is one of the places to see and be seen. My own dad spent a great deal of his younger days at this bar over drinks, salted anchovies and peanuts.  I have a strange affliction for heavily starched and pristine white stiff table napkins. Salad, Soup and Dessert Buffet ($14.80) I usually do not think much of soups at buffets, and scoffed at this greenie which turned out to be the most delicious on the buffet spread. Chunky soup with green pea bits and croutons, a winning recipe! The selection of cold cuts and salads were limiting and there was also a portion for sushi and breads too. Overall a worthwhile buffet for those who want a detox! Crab Croquettes ($10.95) Romesco Sauce Breaded crab croquettes which put the highly priced ones to shame, these plump c

The Oval Revisited @ Singapore Cricket Club

Image
Back at Singapore Cricket Club for our annual pig out session - usually clubs are more forgiving in terms of prices during CNY. Armed with an unbeatable view of the Padang and MBS not too faraway, apart from the views and architecture, nostalgia is the reason why we keep returning year after year. The pieces of history that makes visiting Singapore Cricket Club special. SCC Mulligatawny Soup ($6.90) Famed for Mulligatawny Soup, I wonder why it took me so long to discover its presence. A spicy curry broth sprinkled with rice grains and onions. For the curry lover in me, I lapped it all up - and hardly do I enjoy liquid curries without meat. Now, where can I find an equivalent beyond the walls of this club? Rojak ($7.20) Chef probably did not dilute the prawn paste enough when he dunked it on a pile of ingredients. Too heavy and chunky. SCC Cheese Toast ($5.90) Crisps and Coleslaw Mozzarella cheese on toast with chillies and onions, such is the simple bliss of sandwich eating back in my

Mrs Pho Revisited @ Beach Road

Image
We caught the Mrs Pho bug and made a number of revisits to try as many dishes as possible, in our true obsessive style. Late lunch and early dinners seem to work well in terms of queues, waiting time and more comfortable dining conditions. Hanoi Pork Meat Balls ($3.50) Listed as Mamma's secret recipe, I could not wait to unravel the mystery behind this. Juicy meatballs with sweet glaze and topped with spring onions and chopped peanuts. It then dawned on me how meat skewers are part of our asian cuisine, regardless country. Fresh Prawn and Pork Spring Roll ($3.50) Served with bean paste sauce, this raw vegetable spring roll fared better than the fried and also meatballs for me. Loved the crunch of this! Special Beef Combination Soup ($8.90) This always ends up a must order for me and I get reluctant to try any other dishes. So slurpworthy and self seasoning is always recommended as the soup base is characteristically sweet as with most Vietnamese dishes.   Viet Crab, Prawn and Minc

The Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort and Spa @ Sentosa

Image
I cannot resist staycations, or any reason not to report for work on a workday. Such is a treat when the birthday surprise included a staycation at The Sofitel Singapore Sentosa Resort and Spa - pity no spa packages involved but the gesture was sweet enough! Replacing the now defunct Sentosa Resort and Spa, the place is spruced up and looking alot better than it used to, a difference going under the wing of a French luxury group does. So much love for this chandelier! Splashes of colour in the reception. A pity this was no infinity pool! Spot trees with thorns! Plenty of such bronze structures around the property. Our room located in the Peace Wing was like its name suggests, very peaceful. Comes with a king sized bed, a beverage cart that was so stylish (it can be passed off as a piece of furniture even!) and I fell in love with the room fixtures. So pretty, yes? And the french Italian coffee machine that provided much of the caffeine boosters the addict needed. TWG teas are also
