Saigon Boy Express @ Icon Village

Image
Within CBD, there are probably as many pho shops as there are salad shops. I'm not sure what correlation there is but I am not complaining. Saigon Boy promises Australian Vietnamese food from the heart, so those seeking the authentic Vietnamese experience will be shown the pho but that said, I already liked the forthrightness of this new kid on the block. Barely a month old and it is packed during lunch hours, I look forward to more meals. Lemongrass Pork and Prawn Rice Paper Rolls ($5) Rice vermicelli cleverly draped over prawns and lemongrass pork and secured with nori, Spicy Pulled Pork Burrito with Sriracha and Sour Cream ($5) The same spicy pulled pork as featured in the bahn mi, turns out the burrito was a better fit with it.   Fried Spring Rolls ($5) Bamboo Chicken Spring Rolls with Plum and Mint Dipper The dough was a tad too thick and minced chicken almost lost in the dough but the  plum and mint was a refreshing surprise at the bottom of the jar. The Beef Eater ($9) Be...

Afterglow @ Keong Siak

Image
Vegan food and I are...frienemies. I've had a number of delicious vegan meals and pretty bad ones too. Afterglow stands out for offering such healthy eats along a stretch that indulges in vices, literally. Previously a red light district turned enclave for bars and now a melting pot of the past and present all in a single street. The older folk and Michelin Star gazers would take more comfort in the likes of Kok Sen and Foong Kee , the hipsters would perhaps find love at Don Ho and Muchachos and then comes Afterglow going completely clean. Granted vegan food is real food, it's just not having any form of animal products in their dishes and like vegetarian food, it can be restrictive for the hardcore carnivores. Zucchini Linguine with Walnut 'Meat'-Balls ($20) Spiralized Zucchini, Dehydrated Cherry Tomato Sauce, Almond Crumble "Cheese", Walnut, Shitake and Dates "Meatballs" I love my pastas with a vengeance and Italy remains my favourite city for f...

Red Eye Smokehouse @ Cavan Road

Image
Cavan Road is my new found favourite hang out with the discovery of three eating and takeaway places and all within walking distance from each other. Red Eye Smokehouse like its name suggests is a BBQ place made for carnivores. The chalk board doubles up as a menu and makes it easier to order over the counter as well. I love how they allocate a corner for all these condiments. Bucket sizes for their starters! More condiments to go with the meats. Macho Nachos ($10) Fresh Salsa, Guacamole, Cheddar, Ranch, Chipotle Aioli, Beans Is it just me or nachos are to tempting to ignore when they are on the menu? These off the pack nachos were delicious on their own and the plethora of toppings made them more soggy than delicious. This was on the sweet side than savoury with some heat as expected. Our sharing platter for two. Meats are sold by weight and start from 100 grams. U.S. Brandt Beef Brisket ($15) Angus Beef 365 Day Grain Fed, Hormone Free and Antibiotic Free These highly recommended beef...

Jill Pasanth Mangoes - Icecream mangoes, only better!

Image
A friend introduced these seasonal mangoes from India to me and claimed they were also known as "mango icecream". I was half convinced on the claims but who can resist mangoes anyway? For one, I cannot and mango sticky rice remains one of my favourite fruit desserts of all time, like durian penyat does not even come close. The season lasts from June to July and it's completely a case of catch them while you can! I had them chilled and also frozen just to get an idea how different the taste is. Slice in the middle and twist it like you would to an avocado and it breaks off so easily! No more butchering the poor mango and ending up with ill sized pieces. There is indeed such a thing as perfectly smooth slices and that glistening yellow. Oh, my drool. Peel off the skin and waste no flesh! The batch we had was slightly sour for some and sweet for others, a pity these aren't uniformly honey sweet but I ain't complaining. I'd suggest freezing them for a maximum of 6...

Peranakan Khek @ Cavan Road

Image
I have a sweet spot for nonya kuehs and imagine my delight when I stumbled upon Peranakan Khek. Cake spelt differently! Instead of a matronly matriach behind the oven and counter, it's a relatively younger and full of aspirations fellow Gen Y-er who believes in handmaking her kuehs and these sweet treats ought to be light and rich. I already have full of admiration for her. Someone who believes in continuing the peranakan heritage and preserving these treats that may be lost to machines or worst still, be forgotten. Limited quantities are made daily and I was stoked to find all varieties available when I popped by.  Pre orders are highly recommended though it comes with a 3 day notice. I ended up walking away with a box of goodies. Kueh Salat ($2) I cannot help but gasp at the price for this precious slice, shorter than the length of my index finger, I could not resist but have high expectations for something this puny costing this much. And how wrong was I. The velvety smooth pa...

The Skewer Bar @ Lorong 27, Geylang

Image
I love yakitori as much as I love satays, well...food on a stick just makes the whole experience better. Here comes The Skewer Bar that injects a breath of fresh air to a district that's been popularized by history, hokkien mee and late night suppers. (If I can even try to put to words why Geylang is charming, at all.) Nested within a coffeeshop, this is the only reason why I'd even pay the coffeeshop a second look. Swanky cafe by the side. Word has it that crowds start filling and supper is chaos - so is parking. You've been warned. Signatures. Dining by the curb side has not gotten more happening, and with our killer weather? I say pick a table furthest from the stove even to try keeping cool - which begs the question why would I even eat grilled food at a sweltering 30 degrees on an evening? Anyhow, if you're lucky...beg for one of their air conditioned tables inside their bar and well, good luck. Watching the sky canvas whilst waiting for dinner is....therapeutic so...
