CBD Trail: Wraps

Image
Wraps are the new salads, or not. Most sandwich shops have an option of wraps, likewise salad shops too. It works great for folks who want their sandwich and eat it - without the apparent carbs (fluffy bread versus flat wrap). Dimbulah Coffee 72  Anson Road Nothing fancy, this smoked salmon wrap is by no means spectacular as compared to the other players. A by-the-way kind of order to go with an order of coffee. Salad Stop! Capital Tower Tuna San ($12.50) Romaine, seared tuna, avocado, edamame, cherry tomatoes, mandarin orange, sesame seeds, Wasabi Honey Soy dressing Admittedly, I was drawn to the name of this wrap. Seared tuna sounded good, so did edamame and wasabi honey soy dressing. I watched my fat wrap being toasted, halved and served.  One half started dripping on the napkin that I used to wrap and eat with. Not a good start. There is a choice of wrap: Wholemeal, original, tomato and spinach. I adventurously went for spinach that looked green, and that was the part of spinach...

Restaurant Week 2016: Rubato Italian Kitchen & Wine Bar @ Greenwood Avenue

Image
Greenwood Avenue has been for the longest time known for Lana Cake Shop - at least to me. There are a number of restaurants that line the whole district and gives good enough reason for the perpetually full carpark but it took us this restaurant week to discover Rubato Italian Kitchen and Wine Bar.  Service was incredibly warm from the start, almost pretentious at some point but it was all smiles and accommodating requests throughout our dinner. Dried fruit foccacia was an odd choice to begin the meal, but beggars cannot be choosers. I enjoyed the crustiness of these bread chunks but the inconsistencies were tasted in subsequent baskets. Exquisia Diver-caught  Hokkaido Scallops with Truffle Elixir Cold angel hair pasta drizzled generously with truffle oil and chopped truffles, a very delicious treat! Flavours were mild yet very appetizing. I was already looking forward to the rest of the courses. Molten Mozzarella Michelin-grade Burrata, Dotterini Gazpacho, Wild Rocket The descrip...

Restaurant Week 2016: Patara Thai Revisited @ Tanglin Mall

Image
The last restaurant week visit wowed , I decided to return for another edition of RW. We were possibly the only diners for RW that dinner and the rest were there for ala carte - that sounds like a need for a revisit soon enough! I have always loved the vibe of Patara Thai - traditional with modern touches, classy indeed. Pomelo Salad with Seared Scallops Marinated pomelo salad with a single seared scallop on a bed of fried lemon grass and seasoning. Two different elements with different flavours going on, I love the spice and heat best. One delicious start and the companion was pleased as punch. Sweet and Sour Soup with Mullet Being the typical Thai diner meant my knowledge of thai soups are so limited - tom yum goong with either seafood or chicken. This sweet and sour soup opened a whole new window of flavours to me with a number of firsts to boot; Ginger in soup can taste so good, I ended up gobbling the ginger shreds that I typically avoid like plague None of the fishy taste det...

CBD Trail: Yong Tau Foo

Image
Yong Tau Foo remains one of the hottest meals over lunch - with greens as a readily available option and somehow we are deluded to think that beancurd, greens and mass manufactured fishcakes are the healthiest around. The caveat being, as compared to options like char kuay teow and nasi lemak. The moment the sauces get doused over, this calorie battle is a losing one. Once upon a time, Amara food court had a wildly popular one and they subsequently moved across the street from 100AM but word has it that sometime in 2015 they decided to close for good. Bummer. Tanjong Pagar Market Rong Xing Yong Tau Foo #02-04   $0.50 per piece, minimum $3.  The most popular of the three in Tanjong Pagar with queues starting as early as 11ish am. Waiting time is averagely 30 minutes or longer. I adore this because of the fried white bait that gives the extra crunch and they keep the dry and soupy ingredients separate - how thoughtful! Now, if only the weather was more forgiving! Tanjong Pagar Complex 2n...

La Barca Revisited @ Goodman Arts Center

Image
After our first visit, I made a note to return to check out the rest of their brunch menu. It was reasonably filled with toddlers and families - it's a kid's friendly place that's why! I appreciate it more for the tranquill environment, a major irony since it is kid's friendly - I suppose I was in luck that day since there were hardly any bawling kids. This entry was made across two visits between 2015 and 2016.    Italian Hamburger, with Fried Eggs Topped with Parma Ham, Burrata Cheese, Tomato, Roasted Potato Wedges ($22) The pork patty was a surprise in itself, I expect somehow that burgers would be served with beef patties. Juicy and tender, I was for that nanosecond sold on pork burgers already. The ton of ingredients that came with the burger convinced me that burgers should not only be served with fries for the full hearty factor - looks like the Italians have mastered it with burrata cheese and parma ham too!   Rigatoni with Pork Rib Ragu ($24) While pasta is no...

Pool Grill Revisited @ Marriott Hotel

Image
Dining in Orchard on a weekend always proves one problem - way too many people to jostle with. However the caveat always stands - does it compromise on food with the lack of crowds? Ah, decisions, decisions. Pool Grill by night is a charming dining destination, with those sparkling crystal blue swimming pool waters. By day, the heat can get to you despite being under shelter but thank goodness for the huge industrial fan that saved us from dining in perspiration.  A single slice of corn bread served with a trio of condiments to last us for a reasonably long while before our mains decided to make a grand appearance.  Iberico Pork Cutlet ($36) Piccalilli, Smoked Pumpkin Puree, Compressed Lemon Seared over the grill, those grill marks already made my dish look delicious. The thick cut of pork chop was oozing with juices, very tender and in every sense, droolicious. The side of smoked pumpkin puree was more pickled than puree though. Norwegian Salmon ($32) Heirloom Tomato, Sauce Vierg...

A-One Claypot House @ Kallang Wave

Image
A-One Claypot had very humble beginnings, starting off in a coffeeshop in the days of 2008 and expanding till it has a number of restaurants under its group. Kallang Wave Mall as obscure as it was, was considerably filled thanks to Groupon once again and we bargain hunters were in for a good time, hopefully! We deliberately picked Chef's recommendations to get a better idea of their signatures.  Peanuts ($3.80) I have an issue with canned peanuts, that cloying sweet aftertaste that leaves little to be desired after. Thankfully theirs were homecooked and actually really delicious to nibble on as starters. Premium Dried Scallop Porridge ($12.90) Portions are good enough for 2 if it's just porridge alone but with the array of dishes ordered, it was more than enough for 4. Not quite the sampan congee that Hongkong restaurants are famous for. Infact, I thought this was just ordinary porridge with fried white bait, fish, braised peanuts, squid and dough sticks. Claypot Rice with ...
