Ryoshi Sushi Ikeikemaru @ Liang Court

Image
Conveyor belt sushi was once all the rage in my growing up years - I am not sure if it was the idea of food moving on a conveyor belt or the novelty of sushi on a belt. Or both and that was then that the likes of Sakae and Sushi Tei got ingrained into my spectrum of preferred dining choices. Whilst I have explored beyond both of the abovementioned family friendly restaurants, I was pleasantly surprised how the concept of conveyor belt sushi is still a popular feature at sushi restaurants. Liang Court remains one of the hottest spots for Japanese expats and locals to dine and some may say - best affordable Japanese fare around. I chanced upon Ryoshi Sushi Ikeikemaru alongside the other smaller eateries outside Meidi-ya. Ordering sushi is as seamless as it can be, without any annoying waitress hovering around your table and mispronouncing dish names. It is me and the trusty touch screen. I have to admit this conveyor belt concept still thrills me and I probably got the hang of picking p...

Restaurant Week 2015: Roadhouse @ Dempsey

Image
The only other restaurant we attempted or in this sense, revisited this Restaurant Week was Roadhouse. Halloween was still in the air despite the fact that it was over the night before! Shrimp Caesar Salad An interesting take on caesar salad without the chicken but with shrimp poppers this time. I found the fried shrimps bland though. Bacon Brocolli Soup Bacon is a lifesaver in any dish, including this already very tasty brocolli soup. Both main courses were burgers and knowing that Roadhouse specialises in burgers, I was definitely stoked. We had both to share, beef and fish! The beef had the full works of bacon, beef and onion relish, superbly delicious but my recent burgerscapes have brought me to greater heights so this tasted on the ordinary side in comparison. This was totally a fish and chips in a burger, that chunky portion of battered dory fish would make any junk foodie grin with delight. Multi Nut Pie with Icecream Sold on pecans, my weakness for nut pies were revealed th...

Ippin Cafe and Bar @ Mohd Sultan Road

Image
~Invited Session~ Ippin Cafe and Bar strikes as a casual hangout with a mish mesh of knick knacks - on top of their lunch and dinner sets, they also retail sakes and a ton of Japanese produce. I got acquainted with the ladies at Ippin over a sake tasting set and that saw me lugging home my first bottle of Strawberry Sake. Sake and me have been cordial through the years, I would have very much preferred a cocktail over sake until age caught up and I finally found the sake. Tsutsumi Brewery Plum Wine Kurahachi Umeshu ($29) Light tasting plum wine to whet one's appetite, so I realised there are so many other brands of plum wine around! Grace Piece Darjeeling Tea ($8) This tea has undergone secondary fermentation, a first for Japan and one of the kind in the world. This is also known as "Muscat" flavour for tea because of its soft but rich fragrance and taste. Yogurt Sake ($30) Yogurt Tochi Otome (Strawberry) ($31) This got my vote for favourite of all the sakes sampled, ...

The Market Grill Revisited @ Telok Ayer Street

Image
The Market Grill counts as one of the Hubba's and my favourite places for a good night out - our date nights have been ruined by bad food countless times, it reached a point that we wanted a guaranteed good place. Counter seats are always tempting but the low bag hooks always cause me misery trying to balance the arm candy and camera bag. Plus, those stools are not meant for anything more than butt cheek balancing. Cosy tables are always my preferred choice, thx.  Crispy Pig's Ears ($8) One of my meal fetishes include nibbling on pig's ears - I find my preferences as odd as they sound. These crispy, incredibly crunchy and somewhat gummy delicacy is so addictive. Eaten on its own it can be jelard but pair it with that tangy vinaigrette, this dish is a winner on its own. Onion Match Sticks lived up to its name of being match sticks, these were sliced so fine and fried till they resembled match sticks. Uber tasty and this gave onion rings a run for their money - 2015's ver...

Meat Smith @ Telok Ayer Street

Image
I have lost count how many times I walked past Meat Smith and opted to dine at The Market Grill and finally decided to deviate from the usual path one lunch and found myself in between the metal door and a noisy room of dinners. Welcome to the butcher's club, I quietly thought amidst screaming signs of daily appetizers, mains and weekend visiting chef cookouts. Clearly I have made numerous visits over lunch and the bewitching hour to visit is always after lunch hour. Butcher calibre.  We ended up sharing the communal dining table with two other parties and tried to continue conversation when I could barely hear myself. Lemongrass and mint ($6) A soda based thirst quencher, I was not expecting soda but this was really pleasant. Beef Tongue I must disclaim that I usually do not like animal's innards, with very few exceptions. And I can never imagine myself being tongue-less - like why would I even stomach another's tongue? Well of course, the exception was for ox and bee...
