Kinki House @ Customs House

Image
Yonks back I paid Kinki House a first visit at the height of its opening and back the Japanese fusion was in - fast forward years later and I've returned with my girlfriends for some time out from our sticky kids and well to just bond over a good view - even if food was not top priority. Unagi don was a bowl of charred goodness though the portions are leaning more on a ladies portion. I liked the smokeyness of this and fluffy rice which really is just about any other unagi don there is, if the big question is would I head back to Kinki just for this? I guess not. Inaniwa Udon ($13) proved to be a cheap and delicious eat off the menu! None to fault at this price point considering how the other carb options were hovering above $30. Simple dashi stock with noodles, cabbage and spring onions. Kinki Style Okonomiyaki ($28) Pizza of Hokkaido scallops, prawns, streaky bacon, sweet onions, buffalo mozzarella So there is a twist to the okonomiyaki I am familiar with. This was more of

CNY 2019: Blue Lotus @ Tanjong Pagar Centre

Image
~Invited Session~ From 15 January to 19 February 2019, diners can celebrate the auspicious Year of the Pig in true Blue Lotus style at all their outlets and being their ardent supporter even out of tastings, I was definitely thrilled.  I started the meal with one of their coolers - lemon soda.  Signature Norwegian Smoked Salmon and Sakura Ebi Yusheng ($68)  Nothing fancy schmancy, just yusheng with a twist - instead of the usual raw vegetables as a base the owner, Ricky and his team of brilliant chefs have put together a salad fit for all. Mesclun and baby spinach base, crunchy noodles, julienned fried ginger, fried white bait, candied walnuts, smoked salmon and sakura ebi adorn this incredibly beautiful yet healthy chinese salad.   Spring onion oil and yuzu sauce makeths the dressing and I love that this is not too sweet and it is truly a breath of fresh air amidst all the other shredded cabbage and carrot yushengs. Braised "Tan-Jia" Style Sea Treasure Broth ($12/pax) Ou

CNY 2019: Wan Hao @ Singapore Marriott Tang Plaza

~Invited Session~ Lo-hei sessions at Wanhao are very extravagant affairs at Wanhao, at least for this session we had a showcase of the season's best - which really spells all diets out of the window and no bars on healthy cholesterol or blood levels. Lobster, Sea Urchin, Hokkaido Scallop, Tuna, Salmon, Caviar, Crispy Fish Skin Yusheng  So there, my first pig shaped yusheng courtesy of Wan Hao and this is entirely customisable for big group gatherings otherwise they will be presented as per the usual salad towers. Kudos to them for nabbing my favourite edible bouquet of the year - I mean who can say no to sea urchin, caviar, lobster and tuna! Before chaos begins. And I'd say a beautiful and tasty mess.  Tossing our way to more prosperity is a proven messy affair but won't you want the luck too? Wan Hao Imperial Pot of Prosperity Pen Cai  Trust Wan Hao fans when it comes to their loyalty for their famous festive dish - word has it that there are regulars who head back annual

Summer Pavilion Revisited @ Ritz Carlton

Image
Annual tradition has it that Hubba and I would celebrate our last brunch together at the favourite restaurant of the year and last year we chose to have a meal at Summer Pavilion. So far it has been consistently good and coupled with good service, I really have no complaints. Candied cashews are always welcome. I appreciate how Summer Pavilion allows customisation of pieces according to the party size - I would very much prefer to try more varieties than have to overdose just because we only have two for a steamer of 3-4 pieces. Steamed Prawn, Bamboo Shoot Dumpling ($4) Loved the thin skin and juicy prawns. Steamed Pork, Prawn, Mushroom Dumpling ($4) No matter where I go for dimsum, these are staples and locally, Summer Pavilion's versions are really competent. Mark of a brilliant dimsum chef is how well a delicate dim sum holds up! Steamed Barbecued Pork, Onion, Preserved Vegetable Bun ($4) While this is another dimsum staple, not every place nails this well. The fluffy buns f
