Chunky Crabs @ China Square

Image
Move over lobster rolls, crab rolls are the new rolls - or at least I have not seen crab rolls much apart from crab cakes. I'm not sure what drew me, was it the $16 price tag since for the same price I could get lobster rolls or was it the sheer curiosity. Chunky's Butter ($16.90) I topped up for a drink to go with my buttered lobster roll and spice rubbed buttered crab chunks. Not forgetting those salty yet really addictive tapioca chips. Granted these were not too briney like frozen seafood and the chunks held together pretty well. My grouse was from the buttery roll that ended up soggy towards the end.  Portions are ladylike and be expected to head for seconds elsewhere or just top up for their bisque or fries.  Chunky Crabs 51 Telok Ayer St, #01-06A China Square

Frementle Seafood Market Revisited @ Clarke Quay

Image
I've been to Frementle previously for lunch and dinner appealed this time round for the river side view particularly. Trust the family to make all the odd choices this meal but that is the beauty of discovering food gems - if even the least popular dishes ordered can wow, that does say something. Trio Fish Poke Salad Salmon, tuna, hamachi sashimi, roasted goma dressing I least expected poke to be on their menu and here's us being ridiculous ordering raw fish at a seafood place (not quite a usual sight actually). Surprise, surprise...it turned out way better than expected and the raw fish was really fresh! Sashimi Platter Salmon, Hamachi, Tuna We had more guts and ordered a sashimi platter. This definitely set the stage for more of these platters at seafood restaurants in general. Tom Yum Prawn Tiger prawns, onion, tom yum aioli, mozzarella cheese, mesclun salad I'm really not sure why we decided to order all the menu underdogs, and the most audacious version has to be a p

Punjab Grill Revisited @ Marina Bay Sands

Image
Punjab Grill's always top of the mind recall for good Punjab food and we had the opportunity to dine there yet again after a really good show by the Moscow Circus team - I highly recommend this, super engaging and worth a watch! Complimentary appetizers of arrancini balls with these colourful cream blobs - impeccably flavoured and we were definitely off to a fabulous start! Raunageen Seekhan ($42) Lamb mince with coriander, mint and spring onions in a spicy cheesy sauce Sarson Da Saag ($38) Mustard leaf, radish leaves, spinach, Bathua, Ginger, Rice, Gram Flour, Mustard Oil, Home Churned White Butter It's puke green in colour but my oh my oh my, possibly the most delicious puke looking dish I have ever eaten. Await the peppery and spicy finish, mouthwatering indeed! Murgh Makhani ($45) Tandoor grilled chicken, tomato gravy, dried fenugreek I have had so many butter chicken dishes, this takes the curry for delicious. Having the chicken grilled before being cooked in the curry def

Crave Unlimited Bespoke Cake

Image
Celebrating the sis' birthday is never a single day's affair and maybe because I already create such a huge hullaballoo...the cake definitely has to live up to expectations too right? This year I went all out on cute and going over the top cute with Crave Unlimited's signature Tsum Tsum cake. The ladies were so accomodating with my queries. All hand moulded, these fondant figurines looked soooo cute and none can be eaten of course, which was a waste. Beneath the beautiful exterior is layers of surabaya cake and strawberry jam with nutella. Not too bad a cake actually given how between looks and taste, something does have to give. Prices start from $138 for these beauties!

Baba Steven's Private Dining: A ex-chef turned home cook

Image
Baba Steven or Chef Steven is endearingly known as has been whipping up peranakan feasts from his Bukit Batok Home since he retired. We booked a table of 8 for a $450 dinner comprising of 8 dishes. Baba Steven's chilli is a must try, fragrant and so tasty with just white rice. I clearly overdosed on this whilst waiting for the rest to arrive, just like soy sauce and rice, so simple yet my belly was full on happiness. The feasting kind of started before the mains were served - freshly baked pineapple tarts. These open faced babies come with a mildly sweet pineapple jam baked atop a really buttery pastry shell. Bakwan Kepiting Soup This is almost a Peranakan staple across the private dinners I have done and whilst this is homecooked, I found the meatballs rolled a tad too tightly. Soup is refillable but those balls are limited to two per diner. Ayam Buah Keluak is the classic peranakan dish at all peranakan meals and Baba Steven takes pride in deshelling each of these tough nu

Whitegrass Restaurant @ CHIJMES

Image
This year the sister picked Whitegrass for her birthday and I had this on my list for awhile now, especially with its Michelin starred status now, it did make it more enticing. Reservations were easy peasy and we scored a table in the separate dining hall and a corner to ourselves. We had an array of starters, array would be the right word since they arrived all at once and it was definitely more than a morsel. Deep fried fresh water crab looked perfect for Halloween with its last motion frozen in a deep fry and dusted with herbs that made this the snack of the meal. Now why was I only offered one, I would have wanted a basket at least! Zucchini tart with yuzu cream is a gorgeous creation of cucumber and zucchini swirled into a tart. I love how pickled this tasted with the tangy yuzu cream. Choux puff with cheese is probably the most pedestrian of the three, not that it was not tasty just that with two very outstanding starters, this just paled in comparison. We were served this
