Red Hat Char Koay Teow @ Lorong Selamat, Penang

Image
I definitely was not ambitious in my CKT hunt this time, infact I only had 1 on my list to track down. Red Hat's and how glad was I that there was not only no queue, the weather was within acceptable comfort limits.  Spot the cafe with the CKT signage fronting the stall.  Since I flew into the country, I had to go big or go home. RM 12.50 it had to be!  I wish I could catch the old lady in action but turns out the younger man would be cooking us a storm instead. Lots of lard and frying over this well greased wok. Expectations were set high.  Of all that I've eaten, this definitely tops the list for wok hei, lard and the amazing bit about it is - it hardly tastes oily! So satisfying too with those large curled up prawns, I wish he'd go easier on the bicarbonate.  Red Hat CKT Heng Huat CafĂ©, Lorong Selamat

Pandan Chiffon @ Dulcet and Studio

Image
I've had as many scoop cakes as cream puffs at Tampopo Deli and when they started reselling their cakes at Dulcet and Studio, it was a happy problem - more outlets for these delicious bakes. For the longest time I considered getting their miniature pandan chiffon and perhaps Bengawan Solo has done an absolutely awesome job in branding themselves as the chiffon cake place, I resisted for awhile for fear of disappointment.     $6.50 worth of moist fluffy happiness. This lacked the spongeyness of a Bengawan Solo pandan chiffon but this was twice as fragrant and as moist! YUM. Looks like we found an alternative, and a cheaper one too! Do you have a favourite pandan chiffon cake seller other than Bengawan Solo too?

Get finger licking yummy with Tinoq's Private Dinner

Image
Tinoq Russell Goh needs no further introduction actually. In the fashion industry, he is a celebrated makeup artiste and stylist. In the private dining community, he has been cooking up a storm in his Tiong Bahru humble abode and to support this love has an enchanting herb wonderland. What can't this guy do even? Green fingers? Hell yell. Those talented fingers churned up such a mighty meal, it is one I will remember for a darn long while. $85 gets you typically 7 dishes, we topped up for the rest. We stepped into his world of good vibes only - lots of pink, garish but not outlandish furniture pieces and the knick knacks that reveal the other side of Tinoq. It isn't flashy, neither is it as attention grabbing that his day job is. Put a kitchen apron on him and he transforms into a homebody who opened his house doors and gave us such a detailed tour of his garden and flat. Wow, simply wow. Don't you want to do a sleepover already? Nasi Kuyik Kukus Three different types o

Air Itam Assam Laksa @ Air Itam, Penang

Image
I've read and heard so much about food at Air Itam and that place is seriously studded with so many food gems. I have to stay around the area to be able to check off the signatures even. From dawn to dusk, there is something delicious around the corner. So a special trip was made just for this assam laksa stall - it is almost impossible to miss since banners are plastered all over leading you to this famous one. With business hours running from 1030am till 7pm, there is no time restriction at least! We first start off with a handful of laksa noodles and coriander. Look at that pot of prawn paste sauce, every bowl gets a generous drizzle. All for RM 4.80. The gravy is so rich, I'd imagine the kilos of sardines that went into that bubbling cauldron of stock. Not to mention the meaty chunks, onions and prawn paste that made heaven out of this bowl. Sharing is absolutely not an option and seriously, the best I've ever had in Penang. Boo to imposters because this is def

Mid Autumn 2018: Raffles Hotel

Image
Raffles Hotel mooncakes are an annual staple and there is no surprise this year, the Hubba decided to continue this tradition with two different snowskin flavours. They have ditched the purple themed mooncake tins for a silvery blue design.   AçaĂ Berry and Chia Seeds Snow-Skin Mooncake    Acai fans would love this, a more sinful version of the acai smoothie bowl without the full calories of a snowskin mooncake – literally having your mooncake and eating it. Signature Champagne Truffle Snow-Skin Mooncake   This definitely needs no further introduction – classic and a timeless mooncake. I have eaten this for as long as I can remember and probably the first alcoholic mooncake that took my breath away. Spiked with a lethal dose of champagne that whacks hard but the lingering fragrance of truffle and snowskin is just unmistakenably Raffles Hotel. If there is just one mooncake to waste your calories on, make it Raffles’. Until the next Mid-Autumn, I’d be lusting af

Mustard Seed Pop Up Private Dinner

Image
Of all the private dining sessions, I was looking forward most to Mustard Seed - maybe it was the kaiseki, maybe it was Chef Ming's previous experience at the now defunct Goto Restaurant and Candlenut. I fell in love with Chef's humble abode first, his father very creatively converted their Potong Pasir home into a Japanese themed home, complete with a pebble bath and open concept kitchen and a huge island - just great for hosting dinner parties. Watercress Chawanmushi I baulked at watercress, having eaten this usually in double boiled soups. This was actually a perk me up with the steamed egg flavoured with watercress soup and delve deep for tender chicken cubes, mushrooms and lilybulbs. Fried Frog's Legs in Hakka Style We smelt this when Chef started deepfrying them at the back of the kitchen and man, freshly fried food smells just like heaven. Divine is sinking my teeth into that crisp exterior and take a deep whiff of that panko herb crust and then savour the meat. Fro
