Para Para Sakura....!

Image
No money to fly Japan for Sakura? There's Gardens By The Bay...else...Singapore is slowly getting the hang of having Sakura themed desserts in March-April. Hooray for fad lovers and even with Easter around the corner, I took more interest in checking out the Sakura desserts instead. Soompa this is #notsponsored, I hunted these treats on my own, so enjoy the food porn! BreadTalk Taste of Sakura is available from 15 March to 31 May available at leading BreadTalk outlets. Sakura Kanpai! ($6.20)  both topped with a layer of sakura-infused pudding garnished with sakura blooms. It tasted artificial unfortunately, that sweetness that lingered on and sakura itself tasted like preserved plum. Other variations include  Sakura Snow Cheese, Hai Cheese and Hanami in Bloom. Four Leaves Sakura Mousse ($4.50), pudding topped with pink jelly and the only thing that differentiated theirs from Sakura Kanpai is the nuts at the bottom. As artificial as both tasted, I thought this version was more del

Dragon Boat Festival 2018: Li Bai @ Sheraton

Image
~Media Dropoff~ From 1-18 June, be tempted by Li Bai's selection of savoury rice dumplings. Multi-Grain and Dried Seafood Rice Dumpling ($48) The gorgeous cross section This massive dumpling is made for sharing and it took us 4 to finish this as a dish during dinner. I would suggest 2 to dine if this is the only course during a meal. Stuffed with dried oyster, scallops, salted egg, this multi grain dumpling ticks the boxes of indulgent but nutritious. Other flavours include, Traditional Rice Dumpling ($42) and Abalone and Pumpkin Rice Dumpling ($48). To order please call Li Bat at 6839 5623 or email libai@sheratonsingapore.com

Kuro Maguro @ Tanjong Pagar Centre

Image
Kuro Maguro is a sell out during lunch hours and with their speciality in premium tuna, I've been tempted to just splurge on their lunch sets just for the melt in the mouth tuna slices. Kiwami Meshi ($42.80) This comes with an assortment of sea urchin, tuna belly, salmon belly, sweet prawns, squid, eel and ikura, akin to having chirashi don only way more satisfying because the seafood slices are reasonably thick. Look at how the sashimi curls! Droolicious. Toro Uni Meshi ($35.90) Their assortment of seafood dons are so plenty, we definitely had a hard time just picking two and even with uni and tuna belly, it was equally good. Especially atop a fluffy bed of vinegar sushi rice and seaweed, I can understand why tuna belly itself can hold a meal of its own. Hohoniku Karaage ($16) Maguro Gyoza ($7.80) We were definitely on a roll with all things tuna and even the snacks were also the same. Fried tuna cheek and tuna gyoza were both bar snacks and I prefer the gyoza. Somehow the tuna c

Burlamacco Ristorante @ Amoy Street

Image
Burlamacco has been around for quite a long while and sometimes it takes a weekend and two no opinion foodies to just wing it and check out a place on our list. Reservations made and we scored our seats yet last minute they managed to accommodate our request for a baby chair - big brownie points for that. Freshly baked focaccia loaves were served almost promptly to help us deal with the cranky toddler and subsequently refills. Pot-Cooked Black Mussels in White Wine and Herbs ‘Guazzetto’ ($24) I love my mussels plump with juice, cooked just right and laced with wine. The balance of alcohol and herbs is great, I'm not a fan of tasting alcohol in my food. This was so good, we fought for the last drops. Perfect with their baked focaccia if you even have any remainders by the time the dish is served. Green Asparagus ($14) Nothing to rave about though this arrived the latest. Linguine with Boston Lobster Tail in Spicy "Arrabbiata" Sauce ($34) Typically spicy pasta spells unaut

Tempura Ten Ten @ Raffles City

Image
Tempura Ten Ten joins the stable of tendon restaurants available but their unique selling proposition is, they sell more than just tendon, infact, unagi don and even ramen. Talk about diversification. Special Tendon ($13.80) There are a number of customizations, original, spicy or type of rice. I was honestly tempted by truffle rice with a top up of a dollar but the companion mused "truffle oil". I love how this tendon does not sport the same ingredients as the rest - it does get boring when all restaurants offer exactly the same dish without any differentiation. Two prawns, pumpkin, meatball with cheese, long bean, mushroom, seaweed on a bed of rice made a decently filling meal for me. This probably suits ladies better and it comes with a side of cabbage and chilli padi as well as miso soup. The batter is light yet it still ended up soggy less than mid-way and no complaints since the spicy sauce was tantalizing enough to ignore that. Tempura Ten Ten is a decent tendon place

Don Meijin @ Bugis+

Image
Don Meijin's another option for tendon lovers - and I found out through random scrolling of instagram. Located within Ramen Champion, I love how freestyle this is - one can order from any stall and the options are plenty though still heavier on ramen. Salted Egg Tendon ($16) This looks almost like the plastic food sets when it arrived - it could be the glistening salted egg yolk sauce or the scattering of curry leaves. This is certainly for the food fad fan and particularly it was just sauce without any trace of salted egg grits but I am not complaining when it was so tasty. The portions of the ingredients are manageable as opposed to Kohaku's massive. With 2 prawns, 1 fish, 1 chicken, crabstick, capsicum, longbeans, onsen egg and pumpkin, I was really full. Other special edition flavours include sakura and chilli crab. Original Tendon ($13.80) If fancy flavours are not your thing, there is always the original to satisfy tendon cravings. Mille Feuille Katsu Don ($12.80) With

River Wok @ Mohammad Sultan Road

Image
~Invited Session~ Chef Chookiat presents a mix of dishes from Laos, Indonesia, Thailand and Vietnam at River Wok, barely a month into his new restaurant. Portions presented were scaled down for 2 pax, though that baffled me for the tasting.   Complimentary keropok, if only these came paired with belachan for some heat.   The bar is open and I scored a yet to be launched coconut drink, a combination of coconut milk and rum. Tropical and somewhat playful with the spiking of rum.     Nam Khao Hor ($14) Rice paper rolled with minced chicken and roasted rice crumbles was an interesting spring roll, I loved the texture and combination. In fact this worked better than the usual raw vegetable vietnamese spring rolls. These usually comes in 4's, I was served half as a sampling portion. Do remember to give this a drizzle of their chilli sauce, it's a tasty marriage. Koi Pa Salmon ($19) Marinated Norwegian salmon, asian herbs in chilli, lemon juice The cured salmon was a surprise in thi
