Tien Court Revisited @ Copthorne King's Hotel

Image
We were once wowed by Tien Court but I suppose tastings should not be used as a gauge of its regular performance. This Groupon deal could have impacted the quality of my meal since the basics like appetizers were missing and our supposed "complimentary carpark coupon" barely waived half of the $6 parking fee we incurred for less than 75 minutes at Copthorne King's. Seasonal Vegetables ($18) Stir fried with garlic, this had too much gravy for my liking though I liked the crunch of the greens. Peking Duck ($38, Half Portion) This was the tastiest of the night's orders, crispy skin wrapped in egg crepes and served with cucumbers and spring onions. We could do with more condiments though. Chopped duck unfortunately was a tad dry but nothing sour plum sauce could not save. Salted Egg Prawns ($30) Laced with a certain sweetness that was reminiscent of condensed milk tossed in mashed salted egg yolk, still a decent dish except it got a tad too much for two of us. Plus,

High Tea Buffet @ Regent Tea Lounge, Regent Hotel

This high tea buffet was more of a brunch and tunch combined since we opted for the first seating this second visit. 12 noon to 230pm gets us two and a half hours of nibbles, two refills of beverages each and sheer indulgence on a weekend. If only every weekend could be like this one, so indulgent! What is high tea without tea? Comes with a selection of coffees and chocolate options too. A walk around the healthy section of tossed salads and cold cuts. Salad corner Lobster, Prawns, Pomelo and Green Papaya Salad with Cilantro Dressing Soba Noodles marinated with Chopped Sour Plum and Seaweed served with Japanese Dressing Thai Asparagus Salad with Goji Berries and Sesame Dressing I always wish for more stomach space to take on these deliciously tossed greens and whilst the rest of the diners did not even bat an eyelid at this carefully curated salad menu, I had a field day slurping up salads with difference influences. Personal favourite? Green papaya salad with lobster and scallop c

Cheng's at No. 27 Revisited @ Yong Siak Street

It was one of those nights where a relative dropped by in town and we wanted to showcase our cuisine beyond the usual likes of chicken rice, char kuay teow and salted egg zichar dishes. Cheng's at 27 came to mind, after all, it is a hot pick amongst foreigners too. Menu without prices irk me. Sliced Fish Soup Good not great, this was just sliced fish soup with vegetables. I would think their sweet and sour vegetable duck soup had more character. Fish Slices with Bittergourd Prawn Rolls Crispy meat rolls best consumed piping hot and with a dash of sweet sauce. Steamed Pork Sweet based though it was served with chilli padi and garlic. I would have expected a more savoury version so this was not within expectations. Braised Duck I suppose braised duck is synonymous with the Teochews though almost every other dialect group has its take on this delicacy. Chengs' version was on the tough side with minimal seasoning despite being braised. Not the tastiest on the table. Stir Frie
