河婆客家擂茶 Thunder Tea Rice @ Tanjong Pagar Market

Image
Since getting on the bandwagon of thunder tea rice, I have been scouring the island for the best thunder tea rice and it has definitely brought me to places! Featured today is a stall located in the bustling hawker center of Tanjong Pagar Market. The first visit rendered me a closed shop on a week long's break and finally when I returned again, the queue at any one point dragged for a good 20 people. Patience, I learnt is the key to good food. As I progressed closer to the stall, the number of items getting sold out were increasing. Worse come to worst, I still had my thunder tea rice without additional orders to satisfy the curiosity and hunger. Thunder Tea Rice ($3.50) Meatballs ($0.50 each) $3.50 for white rice and an additional 50 cents for brown rice, incredible value for CBD standards. I never quite had a packed styrofoam box lunch so fragrant till now, it must have been the extra sprinkling of fried shrimp that made all the difference. My thunder tea rice comprised of long b

TKK Restoran Revisited @ Johor

Image
I never had a chance to stay over in a kelong so dining at one is the next best alternative. Back at TKK to relive one of those best seafood meals again, I never quite found another place similar in value and taste like TKK's, though the disheveled state of the place leaves little to be desired after. Dining in the open is no fun especially after the rain and winged insects make themselves too comfortable. Peanuts (RM 2.50) I'm not sure how and why these peanuts ended up being so tasty, we walloped the plate clean before dinner arrived. Dishes arrived way too fast, infact in less than 10 minutes the table was full. Great for ravenous folks yet once the crowd sets in, orders will take even longer to serve. Baby Kai Lan (RM 8) Seasonal greens stir fried in garlic, I only faulted the portions - wish they were bigger! Sweet Potato Leaves (RM 8) Sambal potato leaves to feed that asian streak in me. Sambal Lala (RM 20) Bamboo clams were on my agenda but these delicate creatures die t

Hwa Mei Bak Kut Teh Revisited @ Jalan Lumba

Image
I shall not hide my infatuation and support for Malaysia's herbal bak kut teh over our peppery ones anyday. And even with so many stalls selling this blackened broth with pork ribs simmering, my personal favourite is still Hwa Mei's. With lunch hour closing at 2pm and us reaching at 1pm, I thought we could get a table easily which turned out to be a test of patience and dealing with diners who decided that lunch should be the most leisurely meal of the day. Synonymous with bak kut teh is tea cup washing. The menu board that hardly gets changed, the yellowing edges is telling of age right? Everyone was so busy that day, infact every visit. From cleaning tables to taking orders and finally scooping rice, everyone was so busy and we waited long enough for the pork ribs to be cooked till tender and passed the chef's eye. I hope these kopitiam scenes will never become passe, tucking into bak kut teh without my dripping wet chopsticks and porcelain spoons is not the same. Preserv

Onn Kitchen @ Johor

Image
Finding landmarks for elusive dining spots has become such second nature in Malaysia, it is almost thrilling even just to check another place off the list. Onn Kitchen is home to the city's best roti canai, or so the locals say. Whilst others may swear by Bukit Changar's outlet, there are those that say they are a brother and sister team with the same delicious recipe. Until I've attempted the latter, I will be feeding the cravings with Onn Kitchen. Spot this road and the row of cars and know that you have reached the destination! Onn Kitchen is home to a variety of dishes not just roti canai. Spotted a few dishes foreign to me, perhaps next time! The guys clad in their branded shirts and never once stopped for a breather. Lots of kneading and flipping involving. Hi boss! I was so fixated on roti canai, supposedly an equivalent of roti prata but roti prata is also on the menu.   Milo, Kopi Kosong and Teh C Kosong all formed kopitalk that morning and at prices of RM 1.50, t

Toss & Turn @ Vivocity

Image
Dining at Vivocity can be quite a pain on a Friday night with every single food and beverage station crowded and with a queue - leaving the service free options, options. Toss N Turn had been around for a fair amount of time now, the salad arm of Cedele. There were a number of ongoing dining promotions that featured a salad, hot mains and soup for just $17.40. A pity that my favourite curry pumpkin was sold out, at least roasted peppers and tomato soup was equally delicious. The beef stew was equally good - I can never fault cedele's soups. The hot mains that purportedly included a mouth watering range of peri peri chicken, homemade meatballs and roast beef but we were only left with meatballs for the day. The dampener came when the supposed hot main was barely lukewarm and my soup in comparison was piping hot! Our choices of salad base, 1 deli, 1 hot main, 4 veggies and a dressing. My roast chicken salad with honey mustard was definitely a tastier version than the spicy dressing t

Lychee Chiffon @ Twentysevenbyrachel

Image
This is one of those rare times I actually support a home baker and I already sound like a stalker at the start of this post. I've been following Rachel on her personal blog for as long as I can remember, it could have been her seemingly exciting life as an expat's wife and PHD student in London or those picture perfect bakes that she posted online that sparked off me bookmarking her blog page. Twentysevenbyrachel was started in 2010 in Flat 27 when she was still in London, only appearing at bakesales and flashsales which I never quite had the luck with. Sigh, my luck with food has been pretty down of late! (Which deserves a separate entry of its own) So after failing to nail a single slice - not even whole cake, for months - Yes, I am super hardcore like this, she finally decided to take orders! This, is my first lychee chiffon from Twentysevenbyrachel. It feels like finally being able to meet a long lost friend. Pretty in pink. And that crumb layer that gets everyone so exc

Todamgol @ Tanjong Pagar Road

Image
Eating korean in Tanjong Pagar, is like a fad. Every 10 metres gets you either a fried chicken or bbq place. And come night fall, the place is buzzing with activity. K-mania never quite dies with an outstanding drama every couple of years and to think I left my pubescent idol adoring years far behind me, until Descendents of the Sun came along.  So then, this different looking restaurant stands out - for looking like a garden and a village all at once. I cannot quite put a finger to its oddity, but at least I remember a particular restaurant looking this way in the stretch of eateries. There is just something about wrapped utensils that make them look cleaner than they are. A weird choice of a pavilion right smack in the middle of the restaurant. We have some serious design issues here. With a menu that is heavy on meats, it is no wonder actually when one can get all the fibre needed from their complimentary banchans. Some unusual dishes spotted include a warm spicy potato salad and e
