Green Dot @ Paya Lebar Square

Image
My knowledge of soy based dishes had been limited to O'Bean thusfar and I was pleasantly surprised to chance upon Green Dot. Paya Lebar Square seems to be an up and coming MRT Mall. Green Dot over peak hours like lunch and dinner is crazy packed - find your own table and forget about being waited on. The supposely fuss free way of ordering but they ended up having two ordering points for the mixed vegetables and rice and the rest of the menu. Confusion peaks when crowds are spilling over. The menu is comprehensive with their main ingredients being konnyaku, mushroom and soy. Hotpot seemed to be a popular choice, somehow. Shitake Mushroom Sauce with Soya Katsu ($8.90) Shitake Mushrooms, Beansprouts, Soya Slices, Cedar Leaves Springy and QQ, the noodles were the absolute bomb in this vegetarian bak chor mee dish. Even the mock minced meat was convincing! Enjoyed this dish tremendously. Laksa ($5.90) Noodles, Konnyaku Prawn, Konnyaku Slice, Tau Pok, Radish and Carrot Incredibly valu

Halia Revisited @ Botanic Gardens

Image
~Invited Session~ Halia at Botantic Gardens is one charmer in evening, nestled in a forested part of the gardens, we were treated to a bullfrog symphony throughout our walk in. I was surprised to find that Villa at Halia is the event space of Halia, away from the restaurant proper. Plus, it comes with a bakery that opens only on weekdays and during office hours! What a bummer, I had my eye on their macarons and ginger jam. Lemongrass and Ginger Tiger Prawn Salad ($19) Fresh mango , tomato salsa, glass noodle , ginger flower dressing This is one of those colourful salads that will definitely brighten one's mood and appetite, loved the ta mar ind spiced prawns in this super tangy salad. Deep deep for the delicious glass noodles and mango cub es! Lime and Ginger Yellowfin Tuna Kinilaw 70gm ($18) Coconut, avocado, tomato, seaweed, chilli oil , crispy wonton skin Be greet ed with an unleashing of more thai flavours here, the coconut and avo cado mix is exceptionally creamy and that

Brothers Ramen Revisited @ International Plaza

Image
I love dining at CBD after office hours mainly because there is none of the crowds and lunch madness that takes away the pleasure from eating. My first visit was delicious , second even more so. I never quite got used to ordering from the vending machine - but I suppose that makes for the same experience in Japan too.  Brothers Ramen  Char Siew Topping Made in house, the noodle room is a place where they hand churn out these springy noodles. A huge bummer though when I forgot to mention extra noodles at point of purchase! Portions can be considered ladylike, petite sized even. I loved the al dente noodles that had extra spring in each bite. The broth was exceptional, considering no pork bones were used at all and that milkiness made it all the more addictive. Simple ingredients of seaweed and spring onions made this sheer bliss. I thought the char siew and chicken char siew were a tad too salty. The perfect ramen egg, complete with daffodil yellow yolk. We both wished we had two bow

Romanian Brunch @ Lee Tai Fu

Image
~Invited Session~ Sometime in December, I had the privilege of attending one of the romanian brunch sessions hosted at Lee Tai Fu. Truth be told, prior to this meal I had no inkling of romanian cuisine, the closest I got was our honeymoon photographer who was romanian by descent and that was pretty much it. No trip to Lee Tai Fu is complete without trying their craft beers, anytime in the day. Zacusca with Vinette, Zacuscca with Shitake Mushrooms, Vinette Salad, Boeuf Salad A series of appetizers were served with sour dough bread. Zacusca is a popular romanian vegetable spread and I tried the egg plant and mushroom version. Both were equally tasty, texture equivalent to mashed vegetables. I particularly liked the vinegared egg salad with hints of beef. Portions were definitely too generous, great for sharing. Sheppard Omelet, Assorted Sausages, Sheep Cheese A hearty take on a champ's breakfast with cold cuts, bacon omelette and even cheese. I thought the omelette was well executed,

Shirokiya @ Chijmes

Image
Shirokiya at Chijmes probably does not stand out in the row of Japanese eats - competition is stiff amongst ramen, steamboat and barbeque even. Kimchi Nabe ($39.90) It is strange how I ended up being addicted to their kimchi hotpot, in a Japanese place no less! Meant for 2-3, depending how big an appetite you have but this fed two of us reasonably well. Watching my hotpot sizzle was therapeutic somewhat and made me really hungry. The best part of their kimchi is, it is not too acidic and infact was well balanced in flavours. All eyes on the pork belly getting cooked, slurpworthy rolls of fat and meat! The robust kimchi flavour soaked through every bite and I would recommend ordering a rice set to go with this. Towards the end, the rich broth and rice would serve as the perfect meal ending. Pork Belly ($9) It was so good, we had to have refills of the pork belly. Second portions somehow tasted better! Pancake ($5.90) Mainly cabbage and egg, I say stick with additional pork belly refi

Colony Champagne High Tea @ Ritz Carlton

Image
A major revamp saw the demise of Greenhouse and the replacement with Colony, touted to be the place for champagne high tea. Champagne always brings a twinkle to the eye and lips, pair it with high tea it becomes a successful recipe for full house bookings. Until today, I am a sucker for three tier high tea sets - the imagery of food appearing in three layers is still a very irresistible sight. I shall sum up my experience with three takeaways - Limited three tier high tea sets So this was advertised as a $49++ 3 tier Champagne High Tea session from 330 - 530pm. There was no mention of its limited quantities and we were met with a waiter who proceeded to fill our happy glasses with bubbly and then drop the bomb whilst filling it. "I am afraid ladies that there are only 7-8 sets a day and pre-orders are required because the items are made freshly and have to be ordered in advance..." his voice trailed off with what ended as an upselling of their alternative high tea buffet. &
